marshall seems to have fixed the bias drift issue on amps with a revision 7 or higher tube board number which i think came out around 2002. i still have to source and order a new tube board for my '98 dsl which has a bias drift issue. i also think the factory spec bias setting is too high. they say 90 ma per pair.. which is 45 ma per tube. at 450 plate volts it's too high imho. backed mine down to around 72 ma and it was very glassy sounding.. for the ten minutes or so i could play it.
i'd order a new tube board but i'm in the middle of an lp project that i've got to order parts for and go to work on.
if you're looking at mods you could try the marshall amp forum. there's a whole section on dsl mods over there.

I've seen a LOT of DSLs in backlines only to find out that they're (like Iron Maiden) only getting used for the power section; everyone seems to be using a different preamp into the return of the DSL loop.

That said, I agree 100% with the parts of above posts: get thee a Chupacabra 50 or a Hughes & Kettner Switchblade head. Then spend the time dialing it in... I see a ton of flipping around here and I believe people have become lazy and if an amp doesn't sound magical and do the dance of the pink glitter-shitting pony right out of the box with whatever speakers it MUST be a lousy amp. God forbid anyone should have to work to dial in the tone they want...

PLAY IT CUZ YOU LOVE IT!!!!

DSL 50 with the crunch channel boosted is a glorious thing! Try it!
