Looking at picking up one of these heads at a good deal. Whats the deal with these guys? Is it just a dual rectifier with EL84s?

Sounds nothing like a Dual Recto. Sounds more like a Lonestar, but i like it better than the Lonestar. As far as the combos the best one I've heard is the 4x10. The 2x12 was a bit on the dark side. The cleans are very nice and the gain channel is pretty sweet but not a metal amp in any way. It will get you blues and rock tones. But i like playing leads on it and it has some nice sustain. I've never played the head version but like i said, the 4x10 IMHO was the best sounding one.

Andy Timmons mentioned that the Maverick was really the amp that he felt most comfortable on but since it was discontinued he went with the Lonestar.

I played the 2x12 combo quite awhile back and it was uninspiring to me. It is dark(which I don't have issues with) but didn't have much character. I'm not much of a lead player, may work fine for that.

I had the 2x12 combo about 8 years ago. Overall it is a nice amp, fenderish cleans, distortion was nice but def not a metal amp or anything like a Duel Rec that you are familure with. Best suited for blues, rock and country tones.

I am more of a lead guy and It wasnt what i needed by any means, I bought it at a really good price and used it as a second amp to play with. I dont really miss it but I liked it for what it was, currently I play a Mesa Mark IV which is perfect for my sound and style.

hmmm....the clips ive heard on youtube pretty much go along with what you guys are saying. There is a minty head about 45 min away from me for $500. Wondering if I should do it.

If it's $500, JUMP ON IT! I've liked the ones I've played. The cleans are pretty good. The dirt channel can get you into Rock and maybe some Hard Rock. It has the older channel switching circuit in it like the 2 channel and Triple Rectos. You get kind of a volume drop and swell for a 1/2 second when swapping channels if the volumes aren't balanced out.

If you don't sell it, you can probably move it on eBay for about $800.

thats a good price, i sold mine to a friend 7 years ago for $700. I would think you could get between $700-800.

The Maverick is a really cool little amp. I had one for a long time, and really liked it. It was a 1x12 and I'm just more of a 2x12 or bigger kind of guy. It could do the bright jangly thing, or the dark rootsy kind of thing. It just depends on how you turn the knobs. It's definitely NOT a high gain head, but given the right pedals, it can do the rock/blues thing really well. I'd get it for $500, no doubt.

Closer to a predecessor to the Lone Star than any Recto, IMO. Andy Timmons uses one from time to time & recorded his blues record "The Pawn Kings" almost entirely on one. Sounded great with him playing through it, but then again, what wouldn't?

meh, not gonna do it. Dont think Ill get much use out of it. Even at $500 Ithink ill pass on it. Thanks for the info though guyz
