So I just bumped into this article.

http://forums.peavey.com/viewtopic.php?f=19&t=2047

I was thinking about investing in a Weber or THD hotplate because even when I'm playing gigs, my 5150 II is set on 3-4 most of the time, and I'll never have it properly cranked.

So just a thought, would the yellow jackets work with 6v6s? I'm guessing if you can't use EL34s you can't use EL84s.. but could I use 6V6s?

Would I be better off just pulling two of the valves out and running it at 16 ohms, 60 watts? I dont' see much point in what the guy was talking about in the article - having two Yellow Jackets and two 6l6s..

Thanks. :) I may actually consider this depending on more research and advice/opinion from here.

The YellowJackets are specifically made for EL84 tubes, a 6V6 won't fit. That said, you can use the Yellowjackets in any (just about, at any rate) octal pin-tubed amp, be it EL34, 6L6, or 6V6. The YJ bases contain the necessary circuitry to adapt the EL84 to any of those tube type amps. So, yes, you can use Yellow Jackets in your 5150. I don't know how it will sound, never used them in anything other than a Univalve, and they (it, one tube) sounded pretty good and mean at some lower volumes.

Ooh okay, so how do the El84s differ in tone to El34s? I'd like to get on the more Marshally side of things with my 5150, I know they're El34 loaded.

the EL84 is a middy and bright tube, while the EL34 is more of a middy and warm tube. EL34 has more headroom and power, which will make it sound bigger and punchier, and will make the EL84 sound more compressed and less bassy by comparison. The EL84's middyness has a distinctive honk to it and is somewhat like the old school Mesa middyness. The EL84 also has a looser bass imo.

The EL34 is THE Marshall sound... i'm not a fan of EL84's..

EL84's in a 5150 would be....... interesting to say the least :scared:

Ahh.. so all the things I wouldn't want? Thanks man, I think I'll give this a miss, would be cool to try with someone elses YJ and El84s but yeah.. nah.

I imagine the complex and abundance nature of the 5150's preamp gain combined with the early breakup and brittle tone of the EL84's would sound less than desirable.

can any one upload some picture then it will be easy to find.

Ya, I think you 'd be better off just getting a Hotplate.

I have some yellowjackets and have tried them in the 5150. Did not like it.

the 5150 gets bolder and not as fuzzy after around 4.5 on the volume. but the amp is really all preamp and doesn't react to volume changes like a nmv so I think a hotplate with a 5150 is kind of a waste.

I like yellow jackets you know where i get at wholesale rate... :gethim:

I would stick with the EL34's ;) Nothing worse than paying money to find out you like what you had before better
