The acapella guitar solo: time to kill it off permanently

All this talk of RIP Dimebag and Randy Rhoads recording techniques caused me to do some deep research on youtube (thank god the youtube cameramen were there at the time) on unaccompanied guitar solos and my conclusion is: they suck.

Oh, you can do a diminished scale? Isn't that nice!!!

Hey, you can tap, too!!! Wow. Gracious, you can do sweep picking which sounds like arpeggio exercises my kid sister used to do on the piano. How musical!!!

There's not a lot of musical content in these solos. I get that they're putting on a show and the common folk seem to enjoy them, but can we at least agree that the best days of acapella solos are in the past?

Please feel free to post a youtube of a good one. During my intensive research, I caught one of Dimebag's (sounded kinda like Randy's) and the Randy one from Tribute.

As a musician I really don't care for any of that stuff, especially drum solos. That said, what percentage of fans at a concert are musicians? I would guess 1-2% tops. The band/artist needs to play for the crowd, not the critic. As long as the "common folk" get a charge out of flash of a spotlight solo, they will certainly remain a part of live shows. I recall Randy stating in a seminar that he did in Greensburg, PA shortly before he died that he hated the stuff that he played for his live solo (he was especially down on the tapping section) but the fans expected it so he did it.

Without drum solos, when would you reload on beer or take a piss?

Bro, my work is done on my $23-25k album. My engineer is simply tied up on a higher priority project and I'm the low (not common, but low) man on the totem pole.

I like an unaccomanied guitar solo as long as it's at least in some way kickass, regardless of style or whether it's shred, blues, some interesting controlled feedback, looped playing, etc... Constant shred that doesn't change between songs, though, gets as tiresome for me to listen to as cookie monster vocals that sound the same from song to song and band to band.
