I was cleaning up the storage in the Testosteroom and ran across the old Acme Tone Sucker. I had totally forgotten about this amp. It started out as an 88 JCM800 and then Bogner got hold of it. Can't remember who I bought it from, but I think Todd Duane owned it at one time. Bogner got in it and basically made a 2 channel Super Lead out of it with a clean channel and a less clean, dirty channel......without a master volume. The MV has been bypassed. I found a really low PC rating quad of Tung Sol EL34's and biased it up for some early distortion and threw a couple of NOS Mullards in it and Sovtek R1's. the original V1 has been bypassed with the new V1-V3 on a homemade board. I am assuming the last two tubes are a CF and PI. Couldn't get it to switch channels with a switch, so I shorted a phone plug and left it on dirty.
I had never messed around with this thing too much, until today. Jesus, Mary and the Holy St. Joseph......this amp has got to be borderline driven Plexi at moderate volumes. Loud yes, but manageable without an attenuator, which I refuse to use. Oh, I am hitting it with 100V input. The EQ is quite interactive. The old MV is now a resonance shift I think. Through a 412 with 25 watt Scum M/H's - this amp is the skin ticket....especially with all the "A---------" and "G-------" amps, Jose, EVH, etc. I had emailed Reinhold and Jorg a couple gut shots and this is evidently one of Bogner's first mods he did before leaving Germany and coming to the US.
Fast forward an hour.....the neighbors called over raising t-total fucking hell. As soon as they leave this afternoon, I will make a few clips of this bad boy. And just to think, I was going to flip this thing last year at a decent loss. Going to look for my hairspray, ear plugs and spandex.....and maybe a jock strap.
