I grew up in the same small town as Steve Morse. In fact, he got kicked out of high school, for refusing to cut his hair, lol. That was before "my time" though, because I was still a small kid. His dad lived near my parents, and would walk around our neighborhood for exercise in the afternoons, and when Steve was visiting, he would tag along. I remember my mother pointing Steve out to me, and saying, "He is in a rock band". Of course no one knew that he and Morganstein would go on to make the Dixie Dregs famous, and then Steve would play with Kansas and Deep Purple, and Morganstein with Winger...

I have never listened to them and have never heard Morse play…
The Dregs/Dixie Dregs were always kind of his band, he wrote most of the material. I got to see them in 80's when they opened for ZZ Top then again in 90s when they opened for Dream Theater. I've always like instrumentals but being an instrumental band kind of limited their popularity with a lot of people. He also did the Steve Morse Band when not doing the Dregs, he was a workaholic. He scalloped the fretboard on that partscaster Tele of his...by playing it. Jas O has a cool interview with him.

This and "Dixi Dregs" the same line up?
Thought Dixi was a 3 piece

The initial name when first formed was the Dixie Grits but then they broke and only Andy West and Steve were left. So they said they were the the dregs of the original band and Dixie Dregs became the new band name. They shortened it to The Dregs a few years later. There have been a lot of changes over the years but it’s always Steve.

The Steve Morse Band is always 3-piece as far as I know. None of these ever sold many records so they were always busting ass touring. And that’s where they shine anyway, they’ve always been known as a great performing band.

To think this kind of music got onto fucking American Bandstand back then. I can see the retrospective vid from Beato now about it’s sophistication vs todays Spotify top 10…lol
