so what are some amps/guitars/effects etc with really poor resale value compared to what you're likely to pay for one.

I know Carvin's have pretty bad resale value despite being good guitars

what are some pieces of gear to be wary of if I just wanna buy em and sell em later?

Carvin Amps as well. I had a V3 and 4x12 cab, It was hard to almost give away the cab, and carvin themselves made the V3 head cheaper, so right there it lost value, ontop of trying to sell it...

not bad stuff, carvin makes better guitars though I think....

Line 6 probally doesn't have the best resale value either imo.

Most Peavey stuff as well. Although ALOT of their stuff is actually really nice, the resale on it is shit because it says Peavey.

High end boutique guitars with flame maple tops. There are 1,000 guitar makers out there now it seems that produce guitars that look almost identical. Take a look at Ed Roman's website and you'll see what I mean. Look at the prices and then check Ebay. A lot of these guitars sell for 30 cents on the dollar in the used market.

Rack effects are another guaranteed loser on the used market. Buy an effect for $800 and you'll be lucky to get $200 in a few years for it. Wait longer and it'll sell for $50 on eBay. Again, look at some of the Roland, Alesis, Korg, and other brand name effects for examples. A lot of those racks were the "must-have" effects back in the 90's but now you almost have to give them away compared to what you paid for them when new.

And lastly, PA equipment is another guaranteed loser! I can't tell you how much money I've lost over the years buying and selling PA gear for different bands I've been in.

Warmoth parts guitars, especially if you build something weird.

Tophat, Victoria from what I've seen. Both great amp makers too. Routinely see them used for $1000 less than they are new.

+1 On Carvin, I had a 4x12 I couldn't give away :(

Also anything solid-state Marshall is basically garbage on the used market

+1 on Carvin, I sold my 4x12 for $95.00 on ebay. The buyer paid more for shipping then the item.

Surprisingly most of the stuff in my sig. The Rivera's in particular seem to have shitty resale value. Granted every single piece of gear listed is discontinued. Should prove to be somewhat problematic if I need to replace anything.

Oh and the Randall MTS stuff seems to be going for dirrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrt cheap these days. I think I saw a tweed up for $99 on grailtone. As for the Line 6 stuff I agree for the most part though I paid under $250 a piece for 'em which is less than the pedals new. Like anything if you wait around long enough the opportunity presents itself.

The Line 6 Pro-series rack units have the odd distinction of being both Line 6 and rack gear and having great resale value for some reason. I payed $150 for my Echo Pro when GC blew 'em out after they were discontinued and sold it for $500. Same deal with my Filter Pro. I'm not sure what's up with that, but I'm not going to complain. :D

Vox AC50CPH, had to sell that amp, everyone wants an AC30 from vox, not a 2 channel 50Watt amp with EL34's.

Rivera stuff doesn't seem to have the best resale value either. G&L and hamer guitars are 2 others that come to mind....

Right now, seems like everything!

haha this is waht I was gonna say.

Its hard to unload gear for any decent price right now.

DrZ is a great deal.
Laney
Carvin
Yamaha guitars
Fernandes
Godin

Hamer USA guitars are always undervalued (except for California 27 fretters)
Anything by Digitech, unless it's a whammy II or a DHP-55.
Roland stuff is usually undervalued
power amps, in general, are the cheapest I've ever seen them.

example:

$595, with 44 minutes left
