I know we had a thread a good while ago on Gary Moore, but rather than digging up a zombie thread, I thought I would start a new one.

I am late to the Gary Moore party, but picked up his 'Out in the Fields, the Best of Gary Moore' CD a while back and wanting to dig deeper.

What are the essential 2 or 3 albums I should start with and are there any that are not worth getting?

I really loved his straight ahead rock too.

Check out Victums of the Future

Corridors of Power and Victims of the Future are the era of Gary Moore that I really prefer. Not into his blues stuff but he does that blues rock thing very well

BLUES FOR JIMI: LIVE IN LONDON and BAD FOR YOU BABY are incredible.

Blues Alive
Still Got the Blue
after Hours

Gary had a huge impact on my playing.

Funny story... My college ex ran into him while she was on tour in Irland. She was introduced to him by a mutual friend. She told him that her first mind blowing orgasm happened while listening to his albums. (Blues Alive was my barry white...lol!) she said that he turned red and told her he was glad to help lol

Still got the blues
We want Moore! (this one is live... AWESOME)
Victims of the future

Thin Lizzy - Black Rose...about as essential as you can get.

Corridors of Power - Good songs but the playing is phenomenal. Not to mention some of the best tones he ever recorded.
Victims of the Future - good, must own for Moore fans for Shapes of Things.
Run for Cover - I prefer this over Victims, really good album. And as always great playing.
Wild Frontier - IMO this is probably the best represented material Gary recorded. Pretty much covers all the mans influences, good songs, good playing, great production.
After the Fire - Excellent cover of "The Messiah Will Come" by Roy Buchanan...a solid album that maybe lacks some fire song wise but playing is still great.

Granted that's much of his rock catalog but what can I say, IMO it's essential.

Live DVD:
Live in Stockholm...excellent DVD...this was pretty much the high point of the rock side of Gary's career as he would venture into the blues soon after.

I'll let others handle the Blues era Moore...I just wasn't into it.

Gary's Thin Lizzy work is what convinced me to get his greatest hits. Gary's Greatest hits is what convinced me to go deaper. On the Gary CD I have, I like the rock tunes for the most part better than the blues, so I will probably stick with that era along with 'Still Got the Blues' album.

Thanks for the recommendations everyone. I find as I listen to Gary Moore, some of his style is rubbing off on me, I am hoping for more to rub off.

My favourite is Wild Frontier, but being Irish I am biased.

If you want to see the best of the blues stuff, then the Live Blues album is probably one of the most compelling and best sounding live albums you will ever hear. By anyone.

I also love the Dirty Fingers stuff.

fricken killer, rip gary, dude could plug into a gorilla amp and make it sound good.... always had cool tone and great tunes ,playing and vibe...

Yup. Same here. I got into him back in the early 80s when "Corridors of Power" was new. Check out the intro to "End of the World". That blew my mind back in the day (pre my exposure to Yngwie). And of course, the solo to his version of "Shapes of Things" is just stunning. Love that ripping and LOVE that tone!

I also loved his pop phase. I probably listen to "Dark Days in Paradise" as much as any GM album.

I couldn't pin point anything of GM in particular, all of his works has different styles. One thing is that everything he played he played with a fire in his belly, just a fantastic player with a ton of emotion.

Like many others in this thread, my favorite Gary era is from Corridors of Power and includes Victims of the Future, Run For Cover and the monster live album We Want Moore.

His blues stuff was great too, but got old really quick IMO. I far prefer the early 80's rock era.
