Hey guys,

Deftones fan here. I've tried to capture Stef's guitar tones (especially the ones from his early JMP-1 era's) for a bunch of times but since I have a JMP-1 and LTD SC-20 I thought it would be fun to try again. The signal chain is explained in the video but I tried to keep everything as basic as possible.

The basic chain is:
-ESP LTD SC-20 Stephen Carpenter guitar (Seymour Duncan JB in the bridge)
-Marshall JMP-1 Preamp
-Marshall DSL 50 poweramp (into the fx return)
-Fractal LB-2 Reactive load
-OwnHammer IR's from the Legacy Studio Mix Collection (412 MAR V30-CH)

I really did my best to absolutely minimize any post-processing but some very subtle eq helped the guitars to sit better in the mix. Anyway, all the details are shown in the video.

The JMP-1 still is one of the best sounding amps in my amp collection and as of now I have about 28 tube amps. There is something magic about this amp. I think I need a spare one because I would cry if it ever stopped working! haha!

I'd love to know your thoughts! Check it out:

I think you're in the ballpark. I'd definitely rock that tone. You are also not helping my GAS to get another JMP-1. lol!

I honestly think it sounds too clean, too hi-fi. SC's earlier tone was very raw and a little scratchy sounding, with more emphasis simply on it's sonic assault and punch rather than being overly particular or conscious about frequency matching.

SFW, I'd Love to see you play a JMP-1 and Make a Youtube video for it. I watch all your other videos almost every day.

These are cool videos but I always wish people would go all out with the actual gear because when you start "substituting" lots of gear the was never there then the tone is like the other poster said "in the ballpark" but not a home run.

Not trying to hate in fact I am now subscribing.

The T75 sample in the video seems more in that direction...is that what you're talking about?

Guitarjon,
Curious about the power amp/RL part; could you have just went straight from JMP to out and still used the IR? How different does that sound? I love your videos, you get some great sounds and tight playing!

I hear you! In this case it was hard to find all the exact info because there is a lot of conflicting information on the internet. I also don't have every piece of gear in the world so I kinda have to make due with what I have. I still get where you're coming from though ;) I recently got some new information about what was used on those records and I'll likely try again in the future with more accurate gear... I'd like a homerun! :)

Yeah I have come to learn that Stef indeed used T75's for those recordings so I guess I should have used those speakers for the final results. Next time!

The direct out of the JMP-1 doesn't sound bad but it would have sounded more middy and flat. Less good for sure... You could try though! :)

When I saw them on tour for Around The Fur he was using the matching Marshall power amps but I don’t remember if they were the EL34 or the 5881 models. In the studio, what the power was is anybody’s guess. That album tone has a more raw, metallic edge to than what you achieved but you can clearly hear the bones of the sound in what you have. Any idea if he used any pedals to get the base tone a little more goosed?

If you want that sound, a JMP-1 is a must but for overall diversity in playing rock and metal I always felt they lacked something.

I think he may have used an ada on the first album also.
It has been awhile since I have chased those tones.

I thought it sounded pretty good. I've played a JMP1 through a 9200 power amp and I thought it was pretty synthetic sounding and uninspiring to play nothing like a good JMP or JCM800. I have to say it must record better than it sounds in the room.

About the only preamp I thought had some good tone is the ADA MP1.

That was my impression of the JMP-1 as well.

Cool video, always dug the tones Steph got from the JMP1. Never played one myself though. I heard Stephen put a rack rig together with a JMP1 for Christian Wobers when he switched from bass to guitar, and it was used to record Fear Factory’s Archetype album.

Have you compared it to the Brit pre model in the axe FX? I quite like that model, not hard to get a tight punchy sound without a boost. I've tried the 'jmpre' models but I couldn't get a good heavy tone I like from it.

Would love to hear you do a 7 or 8 string video with it.

I haven't been able to get great tones out of the Axe Fx models tbh but that probably has to do with how I like my power amps etc. with the deep switch on. It's hard to replicate the JMP-1 tone I have in my head with the amp models for some reason. I'll make something with some extended range guitars in the future for sure using that amp! :)

Sounds absolutely great mate!
Nailed it as much as someone can.

I actually think some parts sounded better than Stef... much more full and clearer which I personally like.

Thanks man. I've been eyeballing getting another one, but the prices have gone way up on them. They are more expensive now then when I purchased mine new in 1999. lol
