One of my favourite Charlie Parker Songs is called Dewey Square - which is in New York. I was interested to see what it looked like on Google Maps and couldn't find it... So I looked it up and found out it has been renamed "A. Philip Randolph Square". According to the New York Times on 18 December 1964:
The City Council has voted to change the name of Dewey Square. Instead of honoring the memory of Admiral George Dewey, hero of the battle of Manila Bay, it will become A. Philip Randolph Square, unless Mayor Wagner intervenes by veto.
This proposal is in line with a deplorable trend—the changing of old, established and historic place names to conform to some enthusiasm or personality of the momenta Mr. Randolph is a good labor leader, a fighter for civil rights and an estimable citizen; but before streets or squares are named after him or any other distinguished contemporary, a little time should be allowed to pass by. History should be given a chance to make an assessment.

So basically in a nutshell this shit has been going on since before I born.

Although one thing that has changed is back then the New York Times called it "a deplorable trend". So apparently the New York Times wasn't yet a leftwing mouthpiece.

They renamed one of our local schools after a black communist during the height of the BLM thing
He grew up around here though so it’s cool

Lol - no it's not. Naming things after commies is unAmerican.
