Just a thread for prog lovers to post their faves (I get the feeling the genre doesn't get as much love as it deserves here!).

My background: I got into prog after being a metalhead exclusively throughout my teenage years and into my early 20s. I'd have some exposure to it in my childhood ("Fading Light" by Genesis in the car in 1991!) but had otherwise followed the classic rock / metal path from a young age. Then in 1999 I heard Dark Side of the Moon... then I heavily got into Opeth (still my favourite band)...it just went on from there.

The greatest prog bands in history (in my eyes):

Pink Floyd
Yes (until 1973)
Genesis (until 1977)
UK
King Crimson (first 5 albums)
Porcupine Tree (love all their work)
Camel (everything up to "Moonmadness")
Gentle Giant (esp. Octopus)
Marillion (until 1990)
Rush (pretty much everything up to Permanent Waves)
Supertramp
Van Der Graaf Generator
Jethro Tull
Comus
Discipline

And of course a whole load of progressive metal...DT (first 4 albums), Opeth, Katatonia, Enslaved, Tool, Agalloch etc, jazz-fusion (Mahavishnu Orchestra, Al di Meola, Holdsworth, etc) and progressive electronic music (Tangerine Dream, Ash Ra Tempel/Ashra, Zombi, Steve Moore, Kraftwerk, Harald Grosskopf, Majeure, etc).

Tell us how/why you love/hate prog in this thread! Do also recommend stuff people might not have heard.

I have been a progressive metalhead for many years thanks to Romeo.

Some prog that people will love:

Mad love for the texture of the genre. Just huge epics, technically brilliant audio stories than can blast on for ever. 2112 is a masterpiece; Rush is a huge influence. Was always amazing to me that those guys could get that huge sound being a 3 piece. DT is also a fave; not so much for any one thing in and of itself, but all of it together as a whole. Myung is incredible and so is Petrucci and Rudess, but I don't like them on their own; it's being a part of that whole that makes it great.

Tool is a huge favorite/influence as well. From the first listen to the weirdly melodramatic riff and choppy time signatures, to the great vocals and subject matter I was hooked and never stopped listening.

David Gilmour/Pink Floyd wrote some of the most haunting beautiful music I think has ever been heard, ever.

Something kinda different here; progressive doom/sludge from a band called Maeth. Free D/Ls available.

Good thread, dude.

I love Prog and mostly listen to Prog these days.

Planet-X, DT, Symphony-X, Derek Sherinian band etc. What I really like from the 70s is Colloseum II with Gary Moore ( R.I.P). The song War dance give me goosebumps.

Fates Warning was a huge influence back in the day. They were one of the first for me that mixed a heavier sound with prog

I've been listening to Yes 90125 for the past few days, although you and many others don't like Yes past 1973...I like Drama, 90125, and Big Generator better than the rest. I guess I like the yes with the least amount of Anderson.

I dig all sorts of prog and heavy prog. Floyd, Marillion (saw them 2x with Fish and 2x w/out), Yes, Rush, DT, Tull, etc.

It's cool you mention Discipline. I saw them a few times and saw Mathew Parmenter solo. Also his nephew's band, Eyestrings.

I've been to so many prog shows and festivals (my brother goes to tons of festivals) that I see the massive amount humor in this http://www.salemhill.com/ranrum/proghole.html

I've loved Prog since my younger days (early Yes, Rush, PF, Genesis), and am still deep into it.

DT
Redemption
Symphony X
Darkwater
Arch Matheos
Vandenplos

As well as any other youtube / Facebook prog bands I can find. Big...Epic...Story telling musical compositions that keep me interested on many levels.

Nice - discovered Darkwater last year - they are killer.

A few of my favorites, in addition to the ones mentioned:

Pagan's Mind
Jorn/Masterplan/Ark
Evergrey (sorta prog-metally to me?)
Kamelot

Pagan's Mind and Jorn have been favorites of mine for years!

Evergrey is good stuff as is Pagan's Mind. I find it awesome that Pagan's Mind gets their tone from 5150's

I play a Rickenbacker 4001 bass and own bass pedals. Yeah, I'm a prog nerd. :D

All great stuff guys. My recommendation would be a band called Grails. Check out their "Deep Politics" album from 2011 - really interesting stuff.

Lot of great stuff has been mentioned so far.

I'd add in....
Steve Hackett
Spock's Beard

I'm a big Yes fan, especially Close to the Edge and Gates of Delerium.

Does king crimson count? I friggin love adrien belew and robert fripp!

Absolutely! One of my all time faves. As well as the two you mention, Bill Bruford is one of the greatest drummers of all time.

WHo else PLAYS in a prog band these days? thats what I'd like to know. We are considered 'prog' - though by no means prog metal- and can never find bands to split shows with.

ALl bands mentioned are great. I think Mastodon does some really great progy songs since their masterpiece 'Leviathan'

Coheed can be very prog. I dont listen to them but Porcupine Tree and Mars Volta are heralded for being modern prog.

In the end, nothing beats old Rush for prog rock though. Up thru permanent waves they were prog at it's greatest. Great since but I wouldnbt call their music prog post Tom Sawyer.

Great thread!

Been a HUGE prog fan since I found Rush in the late 70s. They've been my favorite band ever since. But I went through periods where some other prog bands came close to unseating them. Ryche in their Warning/Rage/Mindcrime days. Then DT with Images and Words. Fates Warning was close with Awaken the Guardian and Parallels. Marillion with most of their stuff (Fish AND Hogarth eras). Pink Floyd of course. Triumph and Saga too!

My favorite current prog/melodic metal band since 2004 has been Kamelot. Specifically their Black Halo, Epica, and Karma albums. Also REALLY dig Angra (AWESOME!), Lemur Voice, Nightwish, Nocturnal Rites, Circus Maximus, Dark Moor, etc.

This is a great thread...I'm always looking for different prog bands. I'll never forget when I was about 8-9 years old and heard Close to the Edge for the 1st time. I didn't even understand what the hell what was going on...and loved it. It's still my #1 desert island album.

I was into prog for a while especially the older stuff like King Crimson, Yes, Pink Floyd, and Rush. I do like some of the newer Prog like The Flower Kings, Kaipa, Porcupine Tree, Riverside, Opeth (sorta of Prog), Transatlantic, The Tangent, Ark (Wild Untamed Imaginings) not Ark with Jorn even though Ark - "Burn The Sun" destroys, Fates Warning, Beyond Twilight, Symphony X, Pagan's Mind, Evergrey (my favs), Spiral Architect, Redemption, Pain of Salvation, Zero Hour, Green Carnation to name a few and of course there is Dream Theater.
