RESIDENT ROCK PROFESSOR
I been wanting to have a band again and have tried out 2 drummers . There’s literally no pride in live performance and sounding different. The last 2 drummers (both 25 ish ) were great while we jammed . After about an hour BOTH drummers on different days said sweet let’s record ( the jam as if it’s a finished song ) . They then both wanted to use superior drums to type out what they played . So they don’t even want to play on their own recordings any more . Then with my wall of amps which I love they said we won’t need those just use my plugins . They both showed me their songs from past and they all have identical production like say spirit box . Completely fake and no way of trying to get their own sound . I might add they said they will add synths like sleep token . I’d rather play alone than be a part of this shit . I mean they don’t even want to PLAY on their own songs . I love music and would love a band again but no way

"for the times they are a-changin'"

:dunno:
They don’t want to play their own instruments now . I don’t get the fun and soulful part of making a song now.Alabama no pride in being original. Just type in the sound that’s hot . Fuck me lol

This is why I live in my decade so it never dies.

Just remember about 60+ years ago when Elvis hit the scene, followed by the British Invasion, the older crowd thought the same thing we do now.

“OMG what is this world coming to?”
“Long haired freaky people”

well, theres a reason why i gave up on bands and built my studio and been trying to learn drums to do everything myself, i just never found the right group of dudes that wanted to put the effort in.

Why didn't you tell them "I'll just type out your drums myself don't worry about it", lol. Modeling shit smh.

You have to sort through a lot of people to see your creative vision through. Most of them will be useless even when they have similar musical interests. Most of them will be useless even when they have the chops to qualify. It may take moving to a new area more than once. This is my experience. My best advice is make it YOUR group, not a "band" with endless input from others until they have proven their worth for what you are trying to do. That sometimes means a year probation for guys without a recommendation from a trusted source. You're not their buddy. You ain't their friend. You ain't there to coddle them. Smoke weed and drink on your own damn time. Haul your shit do your job and please show up on time and hit the drums loud. Then you can be known as a jerk like me and waste of time dudes won't waste my time because message has been delivered through the "musical community" that I don't feel like playing grab ass with the others.

We played great together . It’s just after that it’s lap time and all the fake drums and synths . But you’re right . It’s time I do it too

It’s gotten crazy .

Heavy music has been a tough go for a long time but truthfully it's just tough to find good people to work with in any genre. I have the best group of guys I've ever had. You don't wanna know how long it took me to get there and the pains it took to achieve it. I once had 40+ drummer phone numbers on my phone that some good soul hooked me up with in a time of need, no exaggeration. There was three drummers that were usable, good dudes to work with and good dudes to play with who were sometimes available weekdays and weekends if it paid the $$$ and was booked out in advance.. Anyone good is booked. Anyone not any good is available. You have to find guys who are looking to move in your direction.

I have played with a bunch of guys that sounded really good but did not share the same long term vision. It was just mostly a gig to them but they were professionals, to their credit. They would be guys I would still call if I was in need. It just didn't sound like the guys you mentioned shared your recording vision of real amps and drums but maybe you can talk to them about it in a way they will see what you are aiming for. You definitely have to have some diplomacy as a band leader.

I’d just let them know you’re not into that. They also might not be capable of recording drums themselves. It’s very difficult to learn and come up with a decent mix. And they just might mean a scratch track instead of a finished product. That’s honestly what I do to get tight, then when the time comes for an actual release do the real thing. I’d try and communicate your wants and vision. Of course if they’re all set on this being the end all be all fuck em. There’s other people out there. Don’t get too discouraged, finding the right guys takes a LOOONGGG time.

ive had multiple drummers drive me to the point of a nervous breakdown. ive sat in the behavioral health clinic parking lot a few times ready to commit myself over those fucking sons of bitches. might have almost choked one or two unconscious with a coily cable. i cant go through that kind of aggravation anymore.

It took a while but I decided it was not worth earning a knee replacement surgery stomping my foot on stage so that a shitty drummer could learn to count 1-2-3-4 and play in time. I've had many nights of private rage on the ride home over this. My dashboard has definitely taken a beating. It's amazing to me how many drummers cannot play time.

It's been a few years, I tried a few different band/scenarios...I'd get people not interested in the same style of music I listed; or people expecting to drop in to a working band with gigs when I clearly stated "starting a new project".

I'm in a tourist area, most of the established bands and musicians have been here for many years, many born and raised here, so breaking in to bands here isn't easy unless you know someone or make a name for yourself. When I first moved here, I got to know a few local musicians and bands, nearly every one said open mic nights at certain places was where local musicians would go when they were looking for fill-ins or replacements and no one they knew was available or interested. it turned out to be true. Never amounted to anything for me though.

Too many guitarists here; I really don't want to play bass again just to play out; not much interest in Hammond organ players either - most of the keyboardists do the one-man show with a workstation or arranger which I find cheesy - but I thought about buying a 61-key Korg Nautilus a few times but came to my senses in time.

Really good jazz club in town here, gets national and international artists, and a few smaller places that have jazz nights. It's been a few years, but I tried to find a jazz drummer and guitarist to create a jazz trio (I'd be on Hammond), and learned it's even more difficult to break into jazz here, it's an even smaller, tight-knit community.

I did just order my first 5-string bass, so I may go that route to start...
