So, I snagged this beast at GC...I knew it was in rough shape...but I've always lusted after this somewhat elusive limited edition they did back in the early 90s, so I said FUCK IT, I know I can bring her back!

Dried out, discolored, dehydration cracks, dinged, knicked, bone dry fretboard, old dirty skin, rusted hardware, etc.

First step...strip that hoe down and start oiling her up!

I used steel wool to get the sig off and work out all teh discoloration that had happened from years of playing without cleaning. Oil from our hands does a number on Koa for whatever reason...but the steel wool worked perfectly.

So I decided that I didn't like the single coil in the neck and I didn't like the control layout, so I was going to switch that shit. Humbucker was going int he neck and I was switching the Knob and switch positions out...in the time I waited for my template to get there, I did the first coats of Tung Oil...

Neck humbucker now routed! You can see the edge of the single coil route there in the pocket a little bit, but it doesn't overhang the bezel...so it makes me no mind!

I got excited and wanted to see how everything would look all put together, so I threw it all together for an initial mockup type dealie, minus the pickups of course as I was still waiting on them to come in from wade at MCP...

But then, I found out the pickups from Wade weren't gonna be here till NEXT week and I REALLY wanted to play our show tonight in San Antonio with it..so I snagged a Super Distortion, slammed it in the neck and popped my H3 Anderson in the bridge, waxed it, wired it, assembled it and set it up and I'm taking it with me tonight! I can't WAIT to get my MCPs in though...I know it's gonna sound a ton better...but for now...it doesn't sound bad at ALL. Ash is a very neat wood for the body, especially paired with a bolt on maple neck. I dig.

I'll post more pics next week when I get the MCP stuff in, but I can say, as my first real extensive modding/restoration project, this has been SUPER rewarding. I dig it.

All the mods and new parts that when into it are as follows...

Humbucker neck routing
Toggle Switch/Volume knob reversal
KGC Brass Sustain Block
Titanium Floyd Saddle Blocks
MASSIVE cleaning, stripping, sanding and re-oiling/waxing.
New Switch/New 1 meg CTS volume pot.
Anderson H3/Dimarzio Super Distortion (for now...next week will bring custom wound MCPs  )

So yeah, enjoy! And if you're in the San Antonio area, if you can make it to the White Rabbit, my band is playing mainstage at about 10:30. It should be a good time!

Wow. Very nice! I have been gassing for something like that but with the single in the neck. Also, was that George Lynch's autograph on there?

Well done, that looks spectacular! I don't get the volume/toggle swap but to each their own.

Some people do not use the volume knob to get different tones and always leave it at 10. So instead they move the toggle close to switch pups quicker for that mid-solo bridge to hum to bridge technique.

Looks fantastic though man!!

where did you get the template from? i will be doing the same switch/knob change on my M-II as well - it will be a solo guitar mainly, and my style is heavy on the neck/hum/neck/hum switching during solo's.

also, what paint did you use for the pocket routes? it looks really good.

Outstanding job sir!

I could not love it more if it were my own guitar. :D

Outstanding job! That turned out really nice. Fek beat me to it; I could swear that was George Lynch's sig on the guitar. That fact sure wouldn't stop me from refinishing the guitar though :D

Yeah that was Lynch's and I would have sanded it off as well.
