so who do you think is an underrated guitarist? i'll go first.
james root-stone sour
robb flynn and phil demmel-machine head
alexi laiho and roope lartvala-children of bodom
linde-H.I.M

The Edge.

Even tho i feel many people might think he's overrated i think he's still not credited enough for his genius.

Ritchie Kotzen.

While a small niche' of people know how amazing a player he is there are just as many who dont.

+1 on Ty and I have recently been listening to Mike Mills from R.E.M. While all the '80's guys were wizzing up and down the neck, he never wavered from his chordal/arpeggiated(sp?) approach.

Björn Gelotte and Jesper Strömblad of In Flames, they come up with some of the most insane shit. I cannot believe the diversity of their playing.

Especially on there first few albums...he is doing Bluegrass stuff while playing rythym and then rips on the solo....Ty that is :D

Rockey George - Suicidal Tendencies

Man.....he was a monster player. He got little to no recognition in any of the guitar magazines of the day.

How are we defining "underrated?" Is it by least unknown to "normal" people? Or least unknown to guitar players?

If normal people (in no particular order)...:

Tim Reynolds
Jimmy Herring
Michael Akerfelt (or however its spelled   )
Joe Bonamassa
Ed D
The Guys from Plankton
Alan Haynes (phenomenal local guitarist, used to jam with SRV but could take his ass to school IMHO)
Chris Crossland (my old teacher)
Robert Randolph (So he plays a pedal steel, whatever. Dude is ridiculous)

There are tons more...

jeff loomis
muhammed suicmez
gus g
jon schaeffer
jack owen
trey azagthoth
stevie ray vaughn
mark knopfler

we must be talking about underrated to musicians cuz the masses could really care less about guitar. u2 is a HUGE band and most people couldn't tell you who the guitarist is, or the bassist and drummer for that matter. but what is underrated? most of us can easily name 50 guitarists that get no "love" but they're mostly from bands that most people don't know in the first place, or genres that aren't popular. so is the band underrated? or just the guitarist?
+1 to the machine head and in flames boys cuz those bands are semi-popular in the metal crowd and their names rarely come up in a "great guitarists" convo. the edge has been featured numerous times in guitar magazines and as far as unconventional guitarists go, he's the man. plus, "normal" people don't read guitar world much.
i love threads like these cuz it gives us all a chance to throw down some of our fave players and opens people's eyes to some new shit. but defining underrated is so hard, i really don't see the point. good convo, i guess, and there's absolutely nothing wrong with that.

Seriously though. I have an guitar magazine where they picked their 10 favorite underrated guitar players. Some of them were interesting like Steve Miller. Supposedly he's a really good blues player and can play slide really well.

John Fogerty was another who they said never put his guitar abilities on popular tunes and he is rumored to be a rippin blues player..

For metal, i always thought Glenn Tipton from Priest was underrated as a lead player, he had/has some serious chops. Wolf Marshall from Accept was also a ripping player.

I'll try and find that issue
