........I'm really interested in the 50 watt Competition.

Do any of you guys have experience with this amp?

The Splawn Competition is great. I have an older one before the gears and half power switch. Great amp. Anything special you want to know about it?

The site says it has the same gain channel as the Quickrod.

Is it basically the same thing only 50 watts? And minus the clean channel?

Yup, all the Competition is is a 50 Watt single channel amp of the Quickrod

If you switch through the gears with the footswitch aren't you going through various stages of gain?

Is gear 1 clean enough to roll the volume down on the guitar and get pretty clean?

The competition is brighter in tone. I've owned both at the same time.

yes. It cleans up nicely with the volume knob even in 2nd gear. I don't have a 3rd gear. I have KT77s in mine.

AFAIK, the Gears aren't footswitchable (you can switch between OD1 and OD2). Unless this is something new Scott put in.

Great amp, i owned one for a year and it never let me down.

If the manual is correct, that would be wrong, here from the manual:

Competition & Pro Stock Rear Panel Controls
1. Footswitch A
-TRS 1/4" Jack Tip switches Solo Volume-- Ring switches OD1/OD2
2. Footswitch B
-TRS 1/4" Jack Tip switches Clean/Overdrive-- Ring switches Mode Switch

This ^^

You either need a pair of dual footswitches or use something like a GCX/Patchmate 8 and use insert cords. I'm doing the Patchmate 8 with insert cords. I haven't got it hooked up yet, so I'm not sure if the gear switching is sequential on each on/off (1, 2, 3, 1, 2, 3, etc.) or if it switches between something preset and the value on the knob.

Cheers,

50 watts - w/ half power switch (triode/pentode)
Single Channel (overdrive) - solo boost, OD1 (rhythm) /OD2 (lead) mode, 3 gear modes
Gears - 1st - Hot Rod Plexi, 2nd - Hot Rod 800, 3rd - Super Hot Rod 800
3 Button Footswitch - Gear control (see below) - #2 OD1/OD2 - #3 Solo Boost
Gear Control (footswitch) - toggle b/t 1st & 2nd gear (when amp set to 1st gear) or b/t 2nd & 3rd (when amp set to 3rd gear

The gears are footswitchable. (3 button footswitch). However you can't switch all three. Last line above describes it.

I had access to a Quick Rod for a few hours to jam. It has most excellent high gain. As intoxicated on the gain as I was, I did not even attempt any cleanish playing.

Does the QR have anything like an old non-MV Marshall tone? The web site says they do not have non-MV amps but it does not mention how close, if at all they get. Not a deal breaker to me.

Most people that are disappointed with the clean channel are looking for a fender clean tone. If you are looking for a good Marshall type clean, you may be satisfied. For plexi type tones I would use the gear 1, OD1 setting with as much/little gain as you like.... it's not going to be the mother of all vintage plexi tones but you will more than able to pull off some convincing ones....

BTW, who the fuck buys a Splawn Quickrod for cleans??
