I don't think I've heard many convincing strat tones from a PRS until this one.
I'm very close to making a decision on a 513. It's innovative and the approach they've taken is well implemented. While not as close to a Strat as the 305, it has a unique single voice that I like, and it covers a lot of ground. It has a very striking "coo" and some unique tones. The out of phase position 4 sound in the "clear humbucker" mode for example, is really nice. The maple on mahogany model has a beautiful swell and the guitar sustains really well.th3m1ke":1dc1mffe said:Between the 305 and the 513, PRS is really pushing the innovative envelope.

I had a chance to compare a 305 to a Strat last year. It's a bit warmer and the notes are fuller. Not a surprise given the set neck. It was very comfortable to play. However, the Strat had more bite, cut and presence. It would all depend what you're looking for, but I actually preferred the Strat tonally. The 305 was a shoe-in for playability. It's a great guitar.

That's a good point. The attack is a big part of why you may, or may not, like a particular guitar.ke2":3g2b0d9w said:You can hear it in the initial attack. It's not as sharp and direct as a Strat.
But it sounds nice![]()
That's encouraging to hear. Which year and model (i.e. maple on mahogany / mahogany neck, etc.) do you have?th3m1ke":1ur538b7 said:My 513 is currently my most prized PRS.![]()

I'm looking at a NOS 2009, and I've wondered how a 2011 would compare with the new V12 finish, etc. Have you had a chance to play / compare any of the older ones?th3m1ke":1v0r4dqq said:2011 / Mahogany / Pattern Regular Neck / 1-piece 10 top in Black Gold
It's truly the Swiss-Army knife of tones, and it does them all WELL. Not some decent, some OK - I enjoy them all a lot.
I was actually thinking that the new V12 finish has the potential to improve the instrument's tonality. It's a thinner finish and closer to nitro than the poly finish PRS has used over the years. I also understand that 513 wiring improvements have been made.th3m1ke":2l4o0x8v said:I have no issues with the V12 - I have a 2011 Tremonti and the 513 and they both look gorgeous and are protected quite well by the new process.
Interestingly, that's one of the things I like about it.th3m1ke":2l4o0x8v said:My only gripe with the 2009 you're speaking of is not tonal, but asthetic. I don't personally like the "modern" birds they initially released with the 513.
