These are some good strat tones from a PRS.

I don't think I've heard many convincing strat tones from a PRS until this one.

I played a PRS 305 and liked it but just couldn't help comparing it to a strat and thinking how much better I enjoy a Fender w/ single coils. However, aside from a fender it was the best single coil guitar I have ever played.

Between the 305 and the 513, PRS is really pushing the innovative envelope.

I'm very close to making a decision on a 513. It's innovative and the approach they've taken is well implemented. While not as close to a Strat as the 305, it has a unique single voice that I like, and it covers a lot of ground. It has a very striking "coo" and some unique tones. The out of phase position 4 sound in the "clear humbucker" mode for example, is really nice. The maple on mahogany model has a beautiful swell and the guitar sustains really well.

I had a chance to compare a 305 to a Strat last year. It's a bit warmer and the notes are fuller. Not a surprise given the set neck. It was very comfortable to play. However, the Strat had more bite, cut and presence. It would all depend what you're looking for, but I actually preferred the Strat tonally. The 305 was a shoe-in for playability. It's a great guitar.

You can hear it in the initial attack. It's not as sharp and direct as a Strat.
But it sounds nice :)

That's a good point. The attack is a big part of why you may, or may not, like a particular guitar.

That's encouraging to hear. Which year and model (i.e. maple on mahogany / mahogany neck, etc.) do you have?

Edit - Whoa! That's a stunning top! I'd say you've taken first place. :) (I wasn't able to view the image earlier when I read your post).

2011 / Mahogany / Pattern Regular Neck / 1-piece 10 top in Black Gold

It's truly the Swiss-Army knife of tones, and it does them all WELL. Not some decent, some OK - I enjoy them all a lot.

I'm looking at a NOS 2009, and I've wondered how a 2011 would compare with the new V12 finish, etc. Have you had a chance to play / compare any of the older ones?

Thanks.

Terry.

I have no issues with the V12 - I have a 2011 Tremonti and the 513 and they both look gorgeous and are protected quite well by the new process. My only gripe with the 2009 you're speaking of is not tonal, but asthetic. I don't personally like the "modern" birds they initially released with the 513.

I was actually thinking that the new V12 finish has the potential to improve the instrument's tonality. It's a thinner finish and closer to nitro than the poly finish PRS has used over the years. I also understand that 513 wiring improvements have been made.

Interestingly, that's one of the things I like about it. :) It's orange however, which I'm not as fond of, although the colour is growing on me. Most of all, this one sounds better than others I've tried. It very resonant and nicely balanced.

Enjoy those new guitars!
