Thinking of swapping my Aldrich for a Detroiter....

What say you?

I'm looking for a more 3-D type sound, big/clear low end, with that awesome snarl (like the Aldrich)...maybe a bit more clarity overall as well.

I love the Aldrich, and this may be due to having a covered pickup, but it has an irritatingly nasty "chicka-chicka" type thing going on during palm mutes....worsens as you palm mute quicker and heavier.

I'll have a Detroiter soon. Ordered one about a month ago. Can't compare to the aldrich but will be able to compare to his Hot Heads and Afwayu. We shall see.

The Afwayu sounds a bit dark for me. I love a biting upper mid growl...and clarity (without lacking lows) is key. How're the hot heads?

The only other pups I'm looking at are a Tone Zone and Holy Diver

The Detroiter has the upper-mid snarl for sure, and definitely 3D sounding. I have no experience with the Aldrich, but the Detroiter is a hot PAF, around 9.3k, and it sounds hotter more like 12k. I would say the bass is pretty neutral. It's more of a thrashy pickup rather than a chug-chug pickup. It's all over the last few Overkill albums if you are familiar with them.

Holydiver is very different, kind of like a JB and Super Distortion melded together. It's thick and smooth, not an overly aggressive pickup, bass is pretty neutral as well. I don't think it's what your looking for.

Afwayu or Tone zone might be closer?

To give an example, I'm a huge fan of the duncan distortion. Love the clarity

Have you considered a lower output pickup? I've been loving the VHII. The output is around 9k or so, but it sounds killer when it's full tilt. Tons of clarity and versatility with the volume knob. For me, I just don't equate high output pickups with discripters like "clarity" and "3D" anymore. Good luck with whatever you choose.

Just got my first BKP a holy diver, tossed it in my prs. Tight compact bottom, jb ish without a spike, open feel not too compressed. LOVE it! So much got some nailbombs, they are cool but l may like the diver more.

I know the Detroiter is fairly low output.... And the clarity on the sh6 is amazing and it's high output

I've played the Detroiter and Aldrich, and the Detroiter will give you what you're describing in your first post. It's overall fatter and clearer. It rolls off the extreme highs and lows, while having a little low mid bump and snarl in the mids. This keeps the top end smooth, while keeping the low end clear and retaining some body and aggression for some chunk.

That said, it's nothing like the sh6. Very different in feel and tonality.

Wade emailed me back telling me he thinks the 2nd Degree BB would be best for me. He tells me it's a bit more 3-D than the Detroiter, with a little more give in the low end etc....I'm going to talk with him on the phone so he knows exactly what I'm looking for. Then I'll place an order :)

These quotes sum up the Detroiter perfectly. The Detroiter and HotHead bridge pickups are my faves by far.
So juicy and tight at the same time, with a complexity to the mids that I've not heard in any other pickup.

If you are needing a 2nd Degree BB, 50mm bridge, I might have one available (out of my Les Paul).
If so, what other MCP's do you have to trade?
For the right set, in trade, I would probably let the neck pickup go too. :D

I'm looking for a zebra pickup. I don't have any MCPs the trade.

Hey man . I have the Duncan Distortions in my new Charvel So-cal and Afwayu's in my Les Paul. The clarity comment is interesting. The Afwayu's are SO MUCH more clearer than the Distortions it's not even funny. For years here I've heard people rave about the distortion , and I can't wait to rip them out! I mean they aren't terrible, but sound like they have a blanket on them compared to the Afwayu's.

The Afwayu is not a dark pickup at all. I have grown to really like them. My only complaints are that they probably have too much bottom end (I didn't think this would be possible!) and maybe could use a little more grit in the mids for my tastes. It probably doesn't help that they are in a Les Paul for bottom end, however its not "flubby" bottom. But they do sound really good. They sound great split. The neck pickup is so clear for a hum bucker.

Wade really likes the Blackbelts - so I bought them, and end up returning them. Not enough balls for me. They are super clear sounding too - to a point of fault for me. When hitting cords, and playing fast I could hear the individual strings ringing out. At first it was really cool, but after a while it was weird sounding - like you were playing individual strings and not the full sound of the chord. I couldn't get over that, and wanted a bit more output so they went back. For lighter styles of music besides hard rock / metal they sounded great - but that's not me.

I will say I've been very interested to try a set of Detroiters , but been a bit shy of the output being half of the Afwayu and wondering if it would work for me. If I could find a used one I'd probably get it and give it a spin.

Good luck with your decision!

Detroiter really mid heavy and crunchy. Was cool with fat gainy amp like 5153 but was lacking low end chunk for lesser gainy amps and didnt sustain as well up high on fretboard for leads on my lp. Was more classic rock than metal. Had 2nd degree and was less output and flatter eq. I am using a hothead and angeldust and these are higher output and suit me better. Also interested in AFWAYU

If low end chunk is what you need then definitely check out the Afwayu, too. I like both the Afwayu and the Hot Head. The hot head so far to me seems like a tamed down version of the Afwayu. Little less bass and a little more bite in the treble (certainly not harsh in any way though). They both share an incredible complexity in the mids. The hot head is the younger brother that hasn't gotten into too much trouble yet...there's still some hope for a positive life...little more optimism. The afwayu has been mixed up with the law too many times and is proud of it.

Angel Dust and Garuda are it for me!!! The Detroiter does not have the bass these two have but it is a killer pickup. So, if you want something similar to the Aldrich with a little more bass, I recommend the Garuda. The Hot Heads are very good, but not my thing with my set-up. Too dark IMO. Got rid of them and replaced with Garuda's and then the Angel Dust.

The 2nd Degree BB in a LP style guitar is pure magic!!! Amazing!!!
