Time to Retube the EVH 5153 50w - What's Working for You

Mainly looking at power tubes, but also curious what you guys are using for pre's.

I need to check. Will report after tonight. I have almost 150 hours on the amp. You don't think I need pre's do you?
 
Can't speak for the 50w, but I'm using TAD 6L6GC-STR's in my 100w, and they seriously bring the thunder!! As far as pre's I'm using a mix of Tung Sol's, JJ's, Penta, and a Sovtek 12AX7-LPS in the PI. The Key being the Tung Sol in V1 and the Sovtek 12AX7-LPS in the PI.
 
Thanks, guys. madrigal77, what has the Tung Sol and Sovtek LPS done to the sound. How about the TAD's? What change did those make from stock? Cheers!
 
So far I'm looking at a pair TAD's and Mesa's.

I will not go with SED's =C=. I just put in a pair of those EL34s in my modded Eggie Seminar Head and it seams to have lost some balls and punch. Those may go up in the Classifieds soon if anyone wants a matched pair with only 3 hours on them. It'll help me pay for my 6L6's.

...Any other suggestions on EVH 5153 power tubes?

it should have come with JJ's. thats what it was voiced with so why change. how loud are you playing that amp? they are biased cool so if it sounds good and you haven't been running it full out why change anyway?
 
Final bump before I purchase online. Looking at Ruby STR's and TAD GC STR's for the power.

I'm gonna to Tung Sol in V1, and Sovtek LPS in PI. What about V4 for the 3rd Channel?

I've not tried the EL34's but the 6L6 pair I have sound fantastic, and no volume loss at all.
Tone is beautiful with the SED C's.
Did you bias after you installed the EL34's?
I've read nothing but great things about SED EL34's.

Could be bias or a bad tube, new tubes can be bad too.
I got a pair of Mullard 12AX7'S and 1 of them went dead after only about 3 hours of use.
Luckily they have a 90 day warranty and the Ebay seller sent me a new one free of charge.

Some people like the Ruby's. It depends on the amp. I didn't like them in my Egnater or the JSX. The SED C's sounded much better.

I too am running Tung's in V1 and a Sovtek LPS in PI. The LPS are great for a PI, and they sound good in other positions too.
They are a really good tube in any position.

Go for the TAD's. I had Mesa (re-branded Ruby's) in my EVH before I put the TADs in there, and the TADS are much, much better. Way more ballsy.

Yeah, I didn't bias it myself and I think it may have been biased differently than before. I can't bias myself, anyway, so it is what it is.

Ovreall, I think the SED's are good. ALSO, I jammed on the amp this weekend and it seemed "be more alive" than it was 2 weeks ago, with a bit more punch, SO I'm thinking maybe the tubes need some time to really get cooking, especially if they're brand new.

Regardless, i can't afford the =C='s now, away. Cheers!

What are you running in V2,3,&4 for Channel 3? What about V5 and V6? ...Still JJ's? Cheers!

Thanks!! ...So TAD GC's? How were the mids? ...I'd like the EVH to have a bit more of that Marshall roar/Kerrang!
