I am looking out for a "better" Les Paul. Anybody tried the Anderson Bulldog yet? They seem to be selling well, but don't know anybody that owns or has played one. Of course, one of my RT brothers could pop into a dealer and try one out for us :D

Or, I may get another McNaught built to specs.

Steve you're crazy man, add up all the dough you plan on spending on the perfect paul, take that cash, plan a trip to all the boutique Gibson dealers and find "the one"!

They play amazingly well as would be expected. I've tried a couple at Mesa/Boogie. They play more like a strat style TA than they do a Les Paul. The shape would annoy me though. Purely because of looks but nonetheless, it would get to me.

That is easier said than done! Do you know where I am?

I have a few Pauls, two really good players and the other a piece of shit.

I tried one out. I prefer the feel of my Gibby's a lot more. Didn't sound as fat either.

I would recommend picking up a used Hamer Monaco Elite. They can be had for a very nice price on the used market and they do the refined les paul thing like a champ. The stock pickups are a weird combo but that can be easily remedied. Hamer is one of the few brands that I can buy sight unseen and know the odds are gonna be good as long as the owner hasn't done anything dumb with it. Don't buy a new one unless you wanna take a bath on resale, they don't get the respect they deserve. Works for me, all 3 of my Hamers were picked up used but I hate for the guys in New Hartford that are putting some serious sweat into those unsung heroes.

Dean Soltero, great guitar

I think you guys *might* be thinking of the Atom, the bulldog is pretty LP looking and I think looks bad ass, I own this one ! http://www.makenmusic.com/product.cfm?p ... 82&catID=1

I love it, I also have a les paul and have had a ton of them. It does feel and play like an Anderson, for me thats a good thing, tonally it is not as wide as a good paul ie a little less lows and highs, splits are great, but it is way bigger than a strat, it is also really nice to play because everything is recessed. Doing a weekend of 4 hour shows my back could not deal with a Paul. Mine sounds extremely big and is really responsive, spltis are nice too. I would highly recommend this guitar if you like the feel of a TA but want to get more in the LP range tonally/looks. It also has locking tuners and stays in tune pefectly

Cruise TGP and look for a Hamer Monaco Elite, those guys there flip those for .30 on the dollar and they are outstanding guitars.

Even mister boutique himself PR Smith tips his hat to Hamer quality ;)

I have no clue about Hamers the last 18 months since Jol left though.

it's an Anderson, nuff said right there!

my 2 cents is that it will be a million times easier to find a killer Bulldog, than a killer LP.

don't worry about sound, the Bulldog i've been around killed a hand picked LP in the room and pretty much any other guitar for that matter.

plus you know it's gonna play like a dream, with no issues!

I think you are right. That Atom is sort of an ugly turd. The Bulldog is pretty much a carved LP body with a shorter, deeper horn and some contour on the back. Which, as I get older, I need a little more of

The recessed tailpiece and bridge are probably an improvement on comfort and the headstock angle being on the same plane as the neck, has to improve some of the LP's tuning woes.

All the boutique LP "clones" never seem to be as big and biting as a good LP. They're better in many ways, but don't have "that" tone. I'd love to hear one that does.

Understood......"that tone". Gibson has been so inconsistent over the years and the last couple years, they have so many models out that I think it is all about the same. The only one I would consider buying without playing would be a master built one. Then, you are talking about $6000 minimum.

Even then, some guys pick and choose amongst the expensive LP Historics. I'm sure most are amazing but Gibson always lets a few lemons trickle out. They should call those LP substandards

So WHICH model is the "LP" sound?

Chambered?
Solid?
Pancake?
Standard?
Custom?
Rosewood board?
Ebony board?
Cloud 9?
Standard Plus?
PAF?
Burstbuckers?
Custom Shop?
Mass Produced?
Yacamaco?
Murphy Aged?
Studio?
EMGs?

Dead serious not busting balls. 100s have stated "the LP tone" and "nobody else can create it" but I have never been told the answer to their belief. How can one state something and not know why? Kind of basement player / internetish answer no?

Do they own their own private forest?

Another thing, if you really think Tom Anderson, Collins, or any other of the small custom shops can't build a better LP than Gibson you are on drugs

I don't doubt its a great guitar, but it is a bolt on and I wouldn't expect it to sound like a LP.

I would go with either another McNaught,a Nik Huber or maybe a Schroeder if I was looking for a handbuilt LP.

EDIT As noted by Mr. Shark Diver, the Huber listed has a 25" scale length..I would guess they could make it in 24 3/4 also. They have some nice guitars though, and I really like their neck joint.
