the tone zone seems to be one of those pickups like the JB - widely used but It seems to have plenty of detractors

judging by Dimarzios description, it doesn't seem like it'd be great in basswood

opinions?

IIRC, the EBMM EVH rear pickup was pretty similar to the Tone Zone.
Of course, that was basswood w/ a maple cap.

I know Paul Gilbert uses/used the Tone Zone in his guitars but I cannot recall
if they are Alder/Basswood.

Not a big fan of the Gilbert tones, though.

I've had TZ in my RG and loved it. I like above I believe PGs sigs come with TZ.

I've had it in just about every guitar and I like how it sounds, I like the low end it brings.

PG's sig models don't use TZs anymore. He switched back to PAF-style pickups.

Tone Zone is great in basswood. It sounds good in my Mahogany RG too. I think the trick is to lay off some of the gain. Too much gain, as with any pickup, but more so with the TZ, will make it sound flubby.

If you play a lot of leads you'll love the Tone Zone.
