I've always like the SD but was quite surprised with the TZ and have been sticking with it ever since. Any other versions I should consider as an improvement or change?
No honkers though, hate the honk, or wah sounding.

I have a strat style guitar with a Transition in the bridge and its my favorite guitar right now, so clean and tight and quiet as shit with high gain..If you wanna hear what it sounds like go play a MM Luke 3 guitar...

I made a similar transition and ended up with the Dimarzio Gravity Storm.

Air Zone is one you might try. And my EVH USA Wolfgang Stealth sounds like like a slightly lower output version of my EBMM Axis. I assume it was done to avoid being sued. TZ to me sounds like the Axis pickup. In case someone here lives under a rock the Axis pickup is the EBMM EVH pickup. I was infatuated with the Wolfgang pickup for a while. Has the growl of the TZ with slightly less compression and as I said a little less output. Same or very similar eq. I thought in my future builds I'd use the Wolfgang pickup. I've very recently decided I'm going back to the TZ. I like the increased output to drive my amp more. It's that little bit of a push I need.

My favorite guitar is my Axis. Best playing and best sounding guitar I own. And my favorite pickup is the TZ. So maybe other TZ fans would like the Axis too? To make a long post short EVH Wolfgang, Air Zone, and an EBMM EVH/Axis guitar have TZ ish qualities and might be a good fit for some who likes the TZ, but wants something slightly different. Axis pickups pop up on eBay. Why anyone would pull them out is beyond me. But you don't have to buy the guutar to try the pickup.

The dimarzio EVH/Axis set is my favorite dimarzio's and i use them in my super strats.
I found the Tone zone(i have one in my old RG) to be similar but has more bass and output and is not as open sounding as the EVH/Axis bridge model but it is close enough for most.
For the neck the air norton and the EVH//Axis neck pu's are pretty much identical in tone.

The problem with Dimarzio is that they have too many solid pickups.

- I really enjoyed the Air Zone/Fast Track combo, even though it's listed as their "medium" output, it really had that thick booty. It's supposed to be the Air Norton and Tone Zone in one?
- X2N was good in cheap guitars that really needed the extra help, otherwise it's a little too overpowering in a great sounding guitar.
- Super Distortion/PAF Pro is a good all around pickup can do well with classic rock/boosted marshall type sound.
- Crunchlab/Liquifire set was my all time favorite in my Ibanez RGs, perfect for a real heavy sound.

- Chopper T and Area T where awesome in my Tele for an indie rock sound, but they definitely did have twang/honk, and I'm also assuming you're not using a Tele. So I don't think this applies to you. Only had stock MIA hot vintage Tele pickups to compare

If I were to switch back from EMGs, I'd have a hard time picking Crunchlab or Air Zone for bridge, but that's just me.

THIS. Too many choices!

I've had great experiences with the Transitions, PAF Pro, Air Norton, and the Evo2. The Evo2 in a bridge position wired to split the coils sounds great!

Love the Tonezone in my alder SoCal, been wanting to give the super D a try.

I've pulled the Tone Zone from every J Custom that I have owned. It's just not a good match for that model to my ears at least.
