I don't think they've played this song live in decades. One of my favorites because it's raw, unpolished, and unapologetic.

But compare the recent version to the absolute powerhouse performance from '92... Sounds like the recent version is played in a lower key?

Yep, they also played H. Which is one of my favorite songs. Wish I coulda made that show but couldn't due to family obligations. Some mates went and said it was awesome.

Tool must love Auckland because they played a bunch of songs they haven't done in over 20 years. Crawl Away, H., Prison Sex, Sweat, Intension, etc. Wish I had been there. Maynard sounded great too.

Undertow, Opiate and Aenima is Tool, for me.
Lateralus was a marked change, still gets some plays.
10,000 Days and FI, mostly just background noise when I need it.
I can't imagine anything grabbing my attention like the first 3, again. Those were good days.

I agree to a point. I still love all of them.

But people change. They grow. If you look at Tool's discography, you can see how it mimics the progression of most people as they age. Opiate is immature and lacks identity. Undertow is raw and angry and full of energy and angst. Aenima... they found themselves. They are "adults" and have hit their stride. Starting to have more self-awareness and expression and starting to experiment more.

Lateralus. More spiritual. Less angry-ish. More mature and polished.

10,000 Days. Same thing. More growth. More chill. More strength and deeper thought.

Fear Inoculum. They're old. Tired haha... but they've ascended a bit and have wisdom and life experience and they are unapologetically themselves. They have less to scream about and less to fight against.

I think they're next (and final?) album is going to be more of a return to the Undertow vibe.

I don't think they are in 1/2 step. None of their stuff is in that tuning so it wouldn't make sense to just throw it in.
I think it's just darker sounding because Adams rig keeps getting darker and darker sounding and is even more so than it was in the Undertow days. Justin is also putting his own tonal spin on the track by having some added hair on the bass tone.

This my personal fav from the album

I listen to the first few seconds when the music begins in each video and it’s definitely not in the same tuning.

I would guess that Tool tunes down a 1/2 step for live shows nowadays and every song is down a 1/2 step. Not just this one.

EDIT - Does anyone have a guitar in their hands to confirm?

EDIT 2 - I downloaded a piano app and the new video is in C#, while the old video is in B. So 1 1/2 steps difference!

It's played a whole step down from their normal Drop D, ie: Drop C -> CGCFAD in that video. They use the same lowered tuning in The Pot live for Maynards older gentleman vocal range.
