List your top 5 songs that crush you no matter how many times you hear them.

In no order:

Davidian - Machinehead

Allehelgens Dod I Helveds Rike - Dimmu Borgir

Leper Messiah - Metallica

Yama's Messengers - Gojira

Corridor of Chameleons - Meshuggah

I'll wait for folks to list things that make me say "damn, I forgot about that one" :D

I thought I knew heavy until I heard this album.

One of the best kick starters to heavy from the 90s:

Excellent instrumental that's just pure headbanging (with luscious tone might I add):

Another catchy lil' ditty:

So many, hard to pin down just 5... Great thread!!
Mojo

In no particular order:

There's no way I could pick just 5, but these are representative to the kind of stuff that winds me up and makes me want to punch something. :rawk: :bash: :m17:

Anything by Cannibal Corpse. The Chosen Legacy by Dimmu Borgir is pretty brutal too. And most of the black/death metal I've heard is way heavier than most of the stuff posted above, no offense.

Depends what kind of "heavy", but first thing that came to mind was "Suicide Note Pt 2" by Pantera. Fucking ugly and abrasive with a crushing groove.

Strapping/Devin has some INSANE stuff on Alien, City and the New Black that I love!

Dimmu Borgir- "Puritania" was pretty heavy

"Sanguine Seas" , "When the moment's gone" by Sikth and most of that album just blows my mind !! Extremely dark and emotionally heavy as well as bone crushing riffs.

KSE- "Temple from the Within"

Deftones-"Around the Fur", "Korea", Bloody Cape...

Mudvayne -entire LD50 album. Masterpiece among nu-metal garbage, which they later turned into.

Pantera is not heavy.

I vote for BLACK SEEDS OF VENGEANCE by Nile.

Anything that Beneath The Massacre puts out. Start with the Mairee Noir EP. It's a 15 minute long sonic avalanche.

All good choices but I would have to list Culture Club's "do you really want to hurt me" in the top 5.

can't limit to 5, but here's some that spring to mind

it calms down in the middle and then pummels you ..

a lot of Burnt by the Sun's stuff .. not enough is on youtube, but here's a really old tune,

some tunes from these guys - Ion Dissonance

the middle part in this tune from about 2:20 in is crushing

a lot of stuff from this band

a bunch of this setlist .. territory is particularly fierce , notice anselmo and dimebag in the back rocking out

Gojira Backbone

Gojira Explosia

Anthrax Kepp it in the Family

Pantera Domination

Stuck Mojo Down Breeding

and many more indeed. Without the roots, this lists even wouldn't exsist. So Wagner, Prokofiev, Black Sabbath are important to mention IMHO

Man, hard to pick only five, but the top five that pop to my mind are:

Metallica- Sad but True
Nevermore- Born
Hatebreed- I Will be Heard
Testament-Legions of the Dead
Slayer- Disciple

Off the top of my head, I've always thought Zeppelin's Immigrant Song was heavy as hell. Not done with modern high gain amps, etc., but IMHO just a rippin', headbanging song.
