I have a trade offer that I can't seem to make up my mind about. Hopefully one of my RT brothers (or sisters) will have some insight that could lead to an "oh yeah" moment of clarity for me :D

I have a near mint '87 Jackson Soloist that I've put in the classifieds a few times. It's had some interest but nothing has ever panned out regarding a sale or trade. I've had the guitar for a long time and have never really felt an urgency to sell it...when I've listed it in the past it was usually because I had my eye on something else, and I'm on a "one in, one out" agreement with my wife (which I've already broken).

It's a great guitar with a rare color scheme (pearl white with black binding) that would cost a fortune to order from the Custom Shop these days. I simply don't play it much even though its a great playing and sounding guitar...when I want to play a true superstrat, it's all Rand for me.

I was recently offered a Jackson Jazz'r in a trade. It's essentially Jackson's version of a Les Paul although it's hollow and fairly lightweight with a spruce body and quilt maple top and back. I could see me playing this guitar more as it's seemingly a better fit for my current blues/rock project, but having never played one (and not having the opportunity to do so prior to trading) I can't say that for sure.

They seem to be of similar value so I'm not seeing $$$ as an issue.

Any thoughts?

Just curious - what's the trade value of each piece? Unless things have changed, Jackson couldn't GIVE those Jazz'r guitars away when they came out.

I would not do that trade but I don't like the Jazz'r. I don't know the values of each but you'd probably be better selling the Soloist outright and using those funds to purchase something that you really like and will play.

The resale factor could matter. The Jazz axe is unusual looking.

I would look at what is popular in blues and rock now. I don't see many of those.

Seems a 335 would fit blues and classic rock better.

Good luck on the tone quest.

Along the lines of Shawn's comment, if you were going to spend the comparable amount of cash instead of the trade...what guitar would you buy for your blues/rock project? Also, which axe(s) are you using instead right now for the project and how much would this fill the void?

If you are willing to trade, update your ad stating so and I'm sure you will come across a nicer guitar for your current blues playing needs.
That guy is likely offering the Jazz'r up for trade because he knows he can't find anyone to buy it.
If you take posession of it, then you'll eventually be stuck with the same problem.

All good points, and I certainly don't need a guitar for the blues/rock stuff (currently using Anderson Hollow Classic, Suhr Standard, LP Custom, and Gretsch Silver Falcon)...I have that covered well.

I think I'll probably just hang on to the Soloist unless I get a no-brainer trade offer. Obviously this one could lead to regrets.

Thanks helping me clear my head

The Jazz'r is a tough guitar to get any info about. I think it's neat, but it sure wasn't popular. I think that's the kind of guitar where you'd need to find the right guy if you ever wanted to sell it. Your soloist should be able to be sold much more easily.

Yuck! Keep or sell the Jackson and just get yourself a good Les Paul or ES.
