I guess for those that like so much gain all dynamics are gone, but I will stay with Bogner all day long.

Yes, trade the Mesa for the Diezel. Then sell the Diezel and get a real amp like a Friedman or Fortin . :D

Yeah.......the VH4 is just a 'toy'......

The VH4 is one of the BEST SOUNDING amps out there.....PERIOD!
Why even ask this silly question?

I played one. I kinda liked it but walked away not gassing for it at all. For me, a goosed Marshall like a Fortin or Cameron kills amps like Bogners or Diezels. Just my opinion.

I had an XTC with the Marvel mod next to my Fortin for a month. The XTC is long gone. I liked the Cali mod more no matter where the gain was set. I liked the Blue channel on the XTC but IMHO that red channel is crap. Of course, for some guys that's the tone they're after but it just didn't work for me.

My favorite part about this thread is the person who started it only has one post on the forum.

this sucks that sucks............................whatever. The most used amp of the 90s sucks..........funny stuff.

From a money standpoint if it was straight up this is a no brainer.
No doubt.

Im not a big diezel fan but its still a great amp. Id do the trade, have fun with it for a few weeks then sell it and buy lots of goodies more suited to my tastes.....or get a hooker....a real nice one :D

I am just messing with you but I did not like the red on my old 101b, loved it on my classic and liked most everything about the Fish. Have a 20th coming and hoping the red is less compressed and more open. I do love the Bogner voicing however a lot, it fits my style of playing well.

It is fun to mess with each other anyway, that is what the forum is all about right?

Rig Talk isn't exactly a Bogner haven, at least not the main board.

You'll love it, I played Se7en's again this last weekend great amp. For those who like less sponge and more immediacy they will love the 20th but it still has the Bogner flavor to it.

I still think the 101B is great for pop/rock where the sponge isn't a necessarily a liability though.

He even hooked his Fish up through the 20th's power section, what a great tone as well.

I thought Adam Jones used a Triple ? .... to be honest could hardly tell the difference in them and the Dual myself.

i always thought jones' tone could be so much better..it always sounded weak and sterile to me.

Straight trade, sure, no doubt...there are tons of Mesas around.

I've had my Triple Rec since 2002 and besides changing the power tubes several times, the amp has been 100% flawless and has seen me through many shows, been dropped off a stage, dropped in the snow, left in a freezing van for a week, just beat to shit and then some. Its a loud ass amp and I'd never even turn it on if it were at home (i.e. not being played with the band) because its sounds pretty yucky by itself. I really have to     at anyone who says they are shit. I especially love the "...singles and duals sound better because they get the power section working harder." IMO, these amps are preamp distortion monsters with slightly varying degrees of more powerful clean headroom and extra features (single vs. the other with the tube rec option and other switching schemes). The harsh, gritty sound you get by yourself in the basement is exactly what comes alive amongst the other things going on in a full band's worth of noise.

That said, I've never played a VH4 but I do have a Herbert. Herbert and I'm sure the VH4 are awesome, but one cannot detract from the big Mesas. If you are sitting in your basement, by yourself, in front of a Dual or Triple Rectifier and a Mesa 4X12, you are doing it wrong!!!! If there ever is an amp that is cruddy and a let down by itself its the Rectifiers. But that's not the point. The Diezels on the other hand are superb lower volume amps and while I'm happy as a pig in shit to have one, I'd not necessarily dismiss other amps like the Mesa.

Oh well, its all good, I've just had nearly every recto made: single, dual, a couple of t-verbs, rackto, two channel triple and now my three channel triple rec, and it was just with the last one that I've come to the conclusion that they are very context-based amps, and nothing more.

Compared with who ? The Eagles or maybe the Thompson Twins guitar sounds ?

compared with (in no particular order, just off the top of my head):

gary holt of exodus
mick thompson from slipknot
chimaira
trivium
the 1st stone sour album
Killswitch engaged
Soulfly
SOME of the Nevermore tones
Machinehead
Job for a Cowboy
Hatebreed
Gojira
Fear Factory
God Forbid
Lamb of God
Devildriver
divine heresy
as i lay dying
winds of plague

etc.

i always thought he could use some more color and distortion, but thats just me. that's all. sometimes his sound to me sounds washed out, but hell, i dont have to play through his rig, so, meh...moot point.

that being said, Jambi is one of the most impressive songs i've ever heard and probably wouldn't translate with more distortion and a different sound.

subjective.

I see what you mean .... in general you like sounds with higher gain. I use a lot of dynamics in my playing so I like less gain. Most of the time I use about as much as Malcolm Young or a little more. Just a matter of taste.

I always liked the Soulfly sounds. I remember running into Max when he was in Sepultura in Green Bay about 1990. He showed me his rig, it was the first time I had seen a Dual Rectifier.

i ride my volume knob a lot for dynamics. it opens up a whole new realm of tones in a hi gain setting..esp coupled with the tone knob too.

i'd actually like to hear adam jones' sound on it's own, without the band mixed in...for sure he has a VERY tight sound. helluva guitar player/songwriter.....i almost get the feeling that his guitar is just the vehicle for the art.

it'd be interesting to see him jam on his own
