Tremoverb vs RM100. Something must be wrong with me.

I bought a Tverb brand new in 1995. Loved that amp more than any other until 2000 when I foolishly sold it. I have been playing a RM100 for over 5 years now with modded modules that are more in the Marshall family.

Fast forward to last month. I picked up a 1995 Tverb thinking I fall in love with it again and sell the RM. Something about the Tverb just didn't seem right for me. I have so far placed the blame on not remembering how to dial it in and liking 34's better than the 6L6's that this one has. So I put back my original recipe of 34's and swap out the original rectifier tubes with some NOS Jan 5U4GB's.

Have not really opened it up yet with that mix in play but I still think the RM works better for me. It's tighter, more articulate, clearer, and just sounds better. I really must be hosing up the EQ on the Tverb. I remember it being difficult to dial up but this is nuts.

Or, I am just a Marshall guy now.

What cab/speakers are you using now vs. back then? Tastes can change too. I wouldn't look to an unboosted Recto if my critical needs were an articular and clear sounding amp. Maybe try an OD808 in front of it if that's what you're looking for.

Take a look at your whole chain. I almost booted my Fortin Marshall, but then realized my BB+, which sounds awesome on everything, apparently does not sound awesome on this amp. The Maxon loves the Fortin, but not as much on the others.
MTS can be great for clarity, but that Mesa should deliver the punch-you-in-the-chest thunder.

I always secretly liked the RTM series, but by the time I was getting serious about picking one up, Randall dropped the line!

The T'Verbs are pretty cool man. They are one of the better Rectos. If be willing to bet a preamp tube needed to be swapped out. They can have a huge impact on how the Rectifiers sound and feel. If it's fine, I guess your ears have matured with age?

Cabs I have tried: 1960A with V30's and ET65's, TM2X12 with Emi V12's
I originally had a Recto 4X12 with V30's and another 4X12 with Emi V12's.

Chain is LP into Koko, Shiba Reloaded, MXR Classic OD, or Cool Cat Trans OD straight into the amp.

I swapped V1-V3 pre's. I will try the others tonight. Maybe the PI tube is shot?

I am leaning toward being used to the RM and favoring Marshall's as the main reason though.

Your ears are likely just accustomed to brighter, tighter British tones. The T-Verb is a lot darker and looser.

I played a T-Verb for 15 years. I often think of picking another one up but I don't think I would like it as much today (after moving back to more traditional, British-type amps) as I did a few years ago.

I would do a complete tube swap and then decide.... IMO JJ preamp tubes sound great in rectos and Sovtek wxt+ 6L6s..I don't care for EL34s in rectos but to each his own.

Fyi, Bruce is introducing a new modular line in the new year that is backwards compatible with the existing MTS modules.

Interesting. I figured the Tverb would be easier to move than the RM. I will dig through it some more tonight and decide on whether to move it or not. Its looking likely though.

So I turned on the loop, raised the channel masters, and then used the loop master volume as the overall volume control the way I used to have it set up. Tightened it up a bit and was very usable.

Still not my Marshall tones but fun to play. The Tremoverb lives to see another day.
