Here's a quick clip of the Triamp doing heavy tones from channel 3B. I threw this together rather quickly, but I think it give a general idea of how thick the mp can get. This was only one track, as I didn't want to add extra layers and distort the reality of the tone of the amp. Had I taken the time to double track and play tightly I can get the amp to sound ungodly heavy.

This clip was done with the gain about 3/4 the way up, so there is still plenty of room for more saturation. Tuning was in drop d flat.

damn that sounds fuggin great! What poweramp and speakers and mic did you use for that?

Sounds a little on the dark side, and a little muddy. The mud factor could just be because it's so dark though.

It's probably darker than most people around here are used to. I actually prefer a darker tone, as I'm the only guitarist in my band. I think that some of the "mud" you hear is just sloppy playing. I was making it up as I went along... so it's not as tight as I usually like to track.

As for clip details....

I used my Les Paul Classic with a Duncan JB in the bridge. Cable to the Triamp. The cab was a Marshall 1960AX loaded with Celestion Greenbacks. The mic was a Shure SM57 into Cubase 4. MOTU interface. I left the EQ flat at the "board," and didn't use any outboard effects, as I wanted to present the amp as close to the room sound as possible.

The main inspiration behind this clip was to cast some doubt on the opinion that the Triamp couldn't get thick and "modern" heavy. I personally think this amp sounds great for heavy music. It doesn't sound like the typical heavy tone, and that's what I like about it. Hughes & Kettner kinda have their own tonal thumb print that sits very well in the mix. I should mention that this is not my standard tone. I prefer a more hard rock setting, but I was spurred by the Triamp vs Diezel thread that was going on earlier this week. I won't say that I think one sounds better than the other... I think they are both great amps that have their own thing to offer. I just get fired up when people diss an amp that is on the quality level of the Triamp. It is an extremely versatile amp that does a wide range to tones very well. While I am quite happy with my Mark I version, I will say that I think the Mark II does sound better. However, the Mark I is a phemoninal amp for the $1200 that I paid for it. I don't thik think that you can touch it for quality of sound in the under $2k range.

Was there really someone saying the Triamp can't be heavy and modern? I played one 6-7 years ago, and as displayed here, it gets plenty heavy.

I agree it sounds a tad dark. I like darker tones too and end up getting a similar effect to what you have. I think its mic position or angle maybe? Sounds good though

Yeah, it might be the micing done that you hear. I don't know. I'm not very good at the nuts and bolts of recording.

It sounds good, but the clip sounds real distant.

I'm at work so I can't check out the clip at this moment, but I'll def check it out when I get home.

How long have you had the JB in your LP? How do you like it? Better/Worse/Just different from the Aldrich?

The JB is ok. I ended up putting the Suhr DSH+ back in the guitar though. Never had an Aldrich, though I'd love to try one. The JB is just too bright with the TA.

DOH! I thought you had the Aldrich. I can see where the JB might be "too much" for the TA. Is the Suhr p.u. you have lower output than the JB?

The DSH+ is is actually a little hotter than the JB, but it's voiced a bit darker. With the JB, I have to keep the treble donw a bit on the amp. With the DSH+, I just set the trebble and mids flat (noon) and bump the bass to about 2 o clock.

How's the new band going? We decided to stay a three piece and everyone (in the band) is really digging it. We seem to have more energy and focus now, and its not even that our old guitar player was holding us back. Its just a different chemistry I suppose.

The new projest is goings SLOW. I'm trying to write music that doesn't sound like my last band... which is hard because I'm the primary writer in both situations... so it's like trying to not write like me...lol!

Can't get thick and heavy? HAHA! I heard one at a show once and it was damn thick and super heavy. It was the older version with EL34's in it.

That sucks. I'm the only person I know how to write like.

Sounds killer man!

Keep us updated on when the new band gigs I'd love to hear that thing live.

BTW, I know how you feel about trying to write in genre's that aren't really you, it's frustrating.

Will do. Actually, it's not that it's not me... it's that I'me trying to keep it for being my last band part 2 musically. I'm trying to stretch out and do something different.
