After owneg both the 5153 and the 5150II IMO the 5150II is the cooler sounding amp. I just could not get along with the 5153. But hey if you like it then great.

first of all there is no difference between a 5150 and a 6505
there is no difference between a 5150II and a 6505+
There is just a xtra tube in the preamps of the 5150II and the 6505+
Peaveys contract with eddie van halen and could not use the 5150 name anymore so they changed the model to the 6505.
the 65 commemorates the 65 yrs of peavey and the 05 represents the year it came out.
all 4 amps the 5150 5150II 6505 and the 6505+ are all peaveys.
The EVH 5150III is a fender product. Has nothing to do with peavey. Just because it has 5150 in the name people think its a peavey. Personally I think the peaveys sound harsh and kinda brittle. Truthfully they are made with cheap parts thats why they can sell for so little. The 5150III was basically handmade from Eddie himself and sent to fender to preproduce. I would take a 5150III anyday of the week over the peavey. The little things inside the amp make a huge difference in the tone of the amp. The 5150III sounds great IMO and is a amp to stay for a while... People just like the 5150s and the 6505s because they have a ton of gain and low end (which sounds like crap cuz its loose and flubby not tight) and can al that gain can make up for a bad or sloppy player. The EQ on the peaveys suck and its only voiced for modern metal and its voiced bad at that. The 5150III has a great eq and its taylored to all guitarist. Just because a company says the amp can play all styles of music doesnt mean it can. Thats a marketing ploy

This post sucks, and so do you.

a. your information is wrong. a 5150 II/6505+ IS NOT just a preamp tube away from a 5150. The entire rhythm channel is different, and the lead channel is somewhere around 13 components different. The II/+ has less gain, more high mids, and less low end overall.

b. Try telling Andy Sneap, one of the undisputed kings of metal guitar tone, that a 5150 sucks. He uses them on 6/10 of all his recordings somewhere, and he could own whatever the hell he wants in the world.

c. You probably don't know how to dial in an amp if you say a 5150 "sucks." There's nothing suck about it.

If you're so good, here's a clip with a 5150, 5150 II, and 5150 III. Same cab, same mic, same guitar DIs. Tell me which is which.

First amp is at 0:00, second is at 0:30, third is at 0:60.

If you even try to argue that there is a monumental difference in sound, you're trollin' son.

I could barely tell there was a difference between the two. They sounded greta, and so does that tune!

There are actually 3 amps in that clip. I didn't write the tune, just reamped it, but thanks for the kind words. :)

JeffTD of the Andy Sneap Forum did that one. I haven't had time to record my own songs in a while now.

Oh, wow, I didn't notice I wrote "two". I knew there were the three 5150's. I was distracted by robot chicken.

I haven't had a chance to play the 5152/ 6505+. I did own a 5153 for years and thought it sounded similar enough to a Peavey, but it had a clean channel and separate eq's for everything. Having said that, I hated the crunch channel. It sounded like it was 75% XTC blue and 25% SLO. Sometimes I could get it to sound like a soldano, which was good, but most times it sounded like a bogner (I've never liked the XTC)

the cleans were so-so but it took pedals well. The third channel had soaring high gain- the 5153 and 5150 lead channels sound the same to me. Since I've sold my EVH, I can freely say that it had a nice feel to it, but it was lacking that special something, at least for my playing style.

I have an FJA modded 5150 and a 5153. I love them both. I tend to prefer the 5153 because it is a bit smoother and more compressed. However, my 5150 tends to cut better in the mix.

5150's cut like crazy....... The 5153 cuts well in a mix also though. It can be a bit dark depending on the tubes and cab which could make it not stand out as much as an original 5150.

Not to mention on a thread that's been dead for almost a full year![/quote]

And who says ya can't kick a dead horse to get more miles out of it?

I thought I had clicked onto the GearSlutz page for a minute...

I never played any of them, but going from what I've read, the 5150ii has less gain, so I'll say

:00 5150ii
:30 5150
:60 5153

Unlike LOST and Persons Unknown, I hope all answers will be revealed on this one

I liked the first 30 seconds best Greg. I felt like the second one didn't have quite the same level of grunt but it was very similar, and the third wasn't as articulate. The first 30 secs was earsex though.

Yep. You got it right, but I doubt most people will. One thing should EASILY give it away.

TBH a retube in a 5150 original series will make all of the difference in the world. they are very nick-picky on the tubes you use and you can get drastic differences with careful tube placement. a few people thought one of my block letter's were highly modified when it was only tube placement that got the tone.

TBH that was the reason i got rid of my block letter, after a while i didnt like the tone that constantly changed every tube upgrade

good luck on them, i think you will be surprised

i had forgotten all about those clips, its been a few months

i have played all three and have some serious hours on 5150's and 5150 II's, not so much 5150 III's. there are differences from each to each in tone but nothing anyone has mentioned so far on the forum or any forum ftm, and recording those character flaws is pretty impressive - it speaks wonders for your recording techniques.
