Trying to compare EVH and Randy Rhoads... Get real.

Yeah, completely different styles and it really comes down to personal preference. Eddie was definitely more of an innovator and played with a very unique swing. Randy was more technically proficient and classically trained.

My personal favorite at the time was Michael Schenker.

I think the major difference between these two guitar wizards is that Eddie was a better songwriter. Technically, Randy was a better player, but Eddie put more asses in the seats and sold more records.

I think you’re comparing about 8 VH albums to 2 RR albums.

Better songwriter is subjective. Don’t get me wrong, I love Van Halen but Eddie never wrote something as bad ass as Revelation Mother Earth or Diary. But then as I said, two totally different kinds of music/songs.

im gonna tell you jerks a secret.. i been drinking whisky and cream sodas all night listening to randy and eddie. but now i put on Gary. im playing air guitar hardest to him, so he wins :dunno: the organ solo followed by his solo is one of the great pieces of music ever

This riff though.

exactly... Eddie's swing, timing, rythymn.. we're brilliant as well. Randy was more technical. Eddie has more feel. Eddie could have gotten more technical if he wanted. But you cant learn that swing.. I love both, but theyre totally different players. Randy was wanting to stop touring and doing more classical training, im not sure he'd have stayed in the rock/metal world.

That said, I think Randy would have a lot easier time doing the shit Eddie did than Eddie would have doing the shit Randy did.
This may be true technically...But Eddie's timing, feel and sense of "swing" is VERY difficult to get a handle on. And RR definitely had some proficiencies that I believe EVH may have struggled with. Both innovative and amazing. If I could only have one...I would lean towards Randy.

Thats how I feel too. Except if I had to pick one, id lean towards Eddie. 😄

Randy's playing on Tribute is pure apeshit awesome. Crazy fills and just killer aggressive rhythm that blows the studio albums away.
We clearly heard very little of what Randy had to offer in the big picture....

Side note - visiting my cousin mid / late 70's that lived in North Hollywood, he told me he started taking guitar lessons nearby. My Aunt raved about this long haired young guy that was his teacher. I went with them to drop him off for his lesson, didn't pay much attention, funky little house looking spot, I didn't go in. We were 12 yrs old or so. My cousin only lasted about 6 -8 months of lessons there and quit playing. The store was Musonia and his teacher was Randy Rhoads. He still kicks himself for not sticking with it, always brings it up when he sees me. You just never know.

Truth is EVH def inspired how Randy played . He said so himself
