hey everyone,
I know this is a weird question, but is there a way to test the quality of a tube? Reason I ask is I had a quad of Ruby EL34BSTR in my Splawn Nitro that I recently swapped out for JJ EL34II tubes, not realizing that when using the amp in 50watts mode, it doesnt use 2 of the tubes and for the last 2 1/2 years since I put the tubes in, I've only been using it in 50watts mode.

Issue is I've already taken them out and swapped them out with the JJ's, so dont know which came out of which socket.

Would be nice if I could use the "good" pair and save the JJs for later. save a bit of $$.

Thanks

I have a 50$ Mighty Mite portable tube tester; all it can do is tell me emissions (whether the tube is good/bad), grid leaks and shorts. It won’t tell me where the tube will bias at in a circuit. Basically I just use it to test any tubes I buy so that I’m not installing a dud which could theoretically take out something in the amp.

Will something like that help in a scenario like mine?

I don’t know to be honest…you are trying to find out which tubes have more life left correct? I don’t know that can be measured…I do know that the getter flash on the top of the tube, the more there the more life is left vs a tube that is mostly clear at the top…over time the tube ‘eats’ that silver flashing away.

Wish I had a Maxi, but they're a grand.. LOL
