I've got a 92 Dual Rectifier Rev F. It's got Mesa 6l6's in it right now. It had them in there when I bought it, so I'm not sure how old they are. There seems to be some sharpness on the high strings that I can't seem to dial out. Almost mettalic. Wondering if I should switch to el34s. Someone told me I'd lose all my low end with el34's. Any suggestions?

I'd go EL34's, and if you really like a lot of bass you could use JJ's E34L tube that has an extended low end.

favorite power tube for Dual rec is 6550's personally. It will needs modding to accomplish however.

Look to the preamp tubes to affect the characteristics of your Rev. F and maintain the original 6L6 tone of the amp.

34's will completely change the saturation and sag of the amp. Unless, that is what you want.

Keep 6L6s in there. It's what the amp is designed for and the EQ is flexible enough to dial out multiple frequencies in the high end. Also get off the modern mode, if that's what you're using. The massive presence boost caused by removing NFB in modern mode could be the issue you're describing.

If you're not experiencing loss of volume, weird noises or dull tone your power tubes are probably good.

V1-Gold Lion
V2-Tung Sol
V3-Tung Sol
V4-JJ's ecc803s
V5-JJ's ecc83s

This is a combination that was recommended to me and it sounds great with my Rev F. Also, i don't go too high on the presence knob, especially on Red/Modern.

Siemmens 6L6GCs (if you can find them)... and good quality Chinese 12AX7 (5-7th Gen). Stay away from any JJ preamp tubes as that will be mud-city. I'm not a fan of EL34 in Rectos.

In my Dual and Triple Rev F's, I ran Mesa 440's along with JJ 12AX7's. the JJ's are dark, but the rectos have that high end sizzle/presence and it needs something to tame it. Another great tube is the TAD 6L6.

Not if you turn them up loud... and don't max out the gain. :D

They are pretty warm/throaty amp... and not so super high-preamp gain... at least by today's competitors.

I always hate JJs in any amp though. Too dark, and undefined for me. YMMV.

if i need my old recto darker I would put a RFT in V1 or V2

I will say that my old recto was rather modded, Had preamp tweaks (very minor ones) the big thing was the bias mod. only thing i wish i had done other than keep the amp is go for the dual bias mod so i could mix and match.

to hell with this non-sense about it was intended for 6L6s, they've been switchable since the get go. with this sort of logic you must just LOVE crossover distortion of a 6L6 running at 30-40% plate dissipation.

I think 6L6's serve their purpose well in the Dual Rec, but I am partial to EL34's and I like what EL34's do in this particular amp. I think it sounds pretty damn mean.

*Mesa Dual Rec running on Ruby EL34BSTR's
*Slightly boosted with a Kartakou Warmer (via Belarus)
*1978 Gibson RD w/ BKP Aftermath pickups
*Orange PPC412 loaded with Hellatone 50 Ceramic
