Tubes going bad in Brown Eye Amp

Dave or anyone....

I am starting to have some popping and fizzing happening in my power tubes. Soooo.... its time to retube this things. Here are some general questions:

1. Dave, what tubes do you put in the Brown Eye Amps right now? Power amp and Pre amp... I am retubing the whole thing! I want tubes that sound aggressive and mean!

2. When I get the right tubes, how do I bias? I have a Fluke Meter, and the way I have always done it is pull the main fuse, connect there, and bias the over-all amp! So what should the over-all reading be? 152-155ma for over-all tube bias? Thats just how I have always done it. I have no fraking clue how to bias any other way. So thats the easiest/fastest way for me!

3. Dave, can I order the tubes from you?

4. What does everyone else here like?

Dave uses JJ EL34s (not E34L) and 12AX7s in the Brown Eye...you most likely don't need new preamp tubes though.

JJ's huh? I need new preamp tubes because they have been in there since before I sent the amp to day. I think I put them in 5 years ago. one of them is super high gain. I put it in recently because one preamp tube went bad. The super high gain tube is too muddy and mushy. I hate it. So why not retube the whole amp and be done with it.

What do you guys think of SED EL34s?

Jj el34 I don't like the sed tubes in my amps. I use Chinese preamp tubes. I would recommend getting them from ars electronics and get the low noise preamp tubes. Get extra preamp tubes because some will be microphonic.. As far as biasing get a probe to do it. eBay has many for cheap.

I don't have one of the ground-up builds (yet ;) ) but in my 50 watt KS mod, I have these...

V1 - tung sol reissue 12AX7
V2 - 8th gen chinese 12AX7
V3 - 8th gen chinese 12AX7
V4 - mullard reissue 12AX7

power tubes are mullard reissue EL34s.

I think I like this combination best so far, but to be honest, the amp sounds great no matter what tubes are in it.

As for SED EL34s, I had those in a while back, but they seem to do something to the low end that I don't like. The mullard reissues seem to be a bit more neutral sounding

Well, I just ordered that the tubes that Dave said. The guys at ARS were really helpful... and they know Dave and knew exactly what I needed.
