TV Broadcasting of Live Concerts Rant...

Have you ever noticed that a lot of TV broadcasts with live bands sound really horrendous?

Not a performance issue as such, but more a case of engineering coming before art.

It's almost as if some of the engineers have taken great pride in achieving separation of everything, and then making the vocals twice as loud as everything else.

Now, I understand that they also deal with compressions after the fact due to broadcasting, but surely these guys can learn to adjust?

It was some metal band I saw on TV that got me thinking about it. They sounded absolutely ridiculous! It was if some German frequency purist had been given control of the sound:

"We must have ze perfect separation of instruments. Guitars and ze bass must not meet at any moment. We must have ze drums perfectly dry, as to distinguish each separate hit. Ze vocals shall be also dry as a hausfrau, unt it must be twice the loudness of the band, so we can listen to ze nostril hairs growing on zis long haired metal muzik ape!"

Where is the glue?! Do the engineers not listen to the records before mixing the live band?

And vocal harmonies?! What's up with them? They just pop out of nowhere and slap you upside yo head!

Nastiness. It needs to stop.

well another production element they typically are shot with a producer who doesn't really know the material of the band. My unfavorite thing are when a band has 2 guitar players, hell, sometimes just one guitarist, when the guitar solo comes they go in tight on the rhythm player or the bass player and don't even know the dude they're in tight on isn't playing the solo lol

Yeah, that drives me nuts. The other related thing that pisses me off is when an official concert DVD has had each track edited like a promo video - Ozzy's stuff was like that. Plus too many 'fan shots' are irritating as all hell - unless it's you, who needs to keep seeing shots of sweaty people going 'crrraazzzzyy', sticking their tongues out / necking beer / giving the camera the horns or the middle finger?

Like Ozzy's After Hours vid...we get to see Rudy posing with his overhand bass technique for the first half of the solo on Crazy Train. Then we're treated to shots of Tommy drumming,Rudy playing the bass, and Ozzy going into convulsions while Randy tears into the Mr Crowley solo (at least they figured it out a few measures in)...then Rudy gets more face time during the outro
