K, so I have my H&K Triamp, which I'm using chiefly lately, especially since i managed to fix the goddamn thing finally (weird bad treble pot problem) but I also like to keep my 6505+ as a backup. I run either head through a Peavey 412MS cabinet which is switchable between Mono (16ohms) and Stereo (8ohms). Both amp heads have selectable impedances.

I'm not looking to run both heads into the cab at once and A/B them or anything. I would just like to have the 6505+ plugged in and in standby mode so if something happens with the triamp, basically all I have to do is power it off, plug the guitar into the 6505+ and take it off standby.

So my question is, would it hurt to have a second head plugged into the cab and in standby mode at the same time as I'm playing the other amp through the same cabinet? Or hell could I even just leave it unplugged from the cab and in standby mode or does that still wreck the trannies?

You'll need to swap the speaker cable from the cab to your other amp's output jacks. You can leave it on standby, but don't eff up and leave it ON with no speaker cable attached to a cab, and inserted fully. It needs to see the speaker load if you have it ON at all times or you can damage your OT/tubes.

You could always consider a cab bone device as well.

+1

standby is fine without a load, but do NOT power the amplifier into the on position (supplying power to the screens/plates) with no load or cabinet plugged in.

for 5150's this will be fine. for most marshalls it will be fine. but it really depends on the standby switch installment of the particular amplifier. so for other amplifiers or odball models consult a tech that can verify the standby switch location of your amplifier before you try this.

for your case though, you will be fine. i have done it for years testing cabinets without a problem at all.

if one goes down, plug in the speaker cabinet into the 5150, plug in your guitar cable, flip the standby switch on and go to town.

I used to do that all the time when I had 2 or more amps.
I had it down to a science.
Could do the cable swap....power up in less then a minute.
Not too bad or even troublesome if you have easy access to the back of the amps/cab.
