Are these essentially the same as the Classic Lead? If not, what are the differences?

I notice some places calling the Classic Lead 80 the G12-80....but I see some discussion on "pre Rola G1280's"......

The G12-80 was prior to the Classic Lead 80 and Mesa MC90. No idea what the differences are. If you search on G12-80, I think this has come up though....

G12-80H Rola Celestions were made in 81'-82', maybe 83' too, they have a very heavy magnet, not the same as a classic lead 80, my cab is a 1981' model 1982a JCM 800 4x12, these speakers have a good bottom and can handle anything you can throw at them, cab is rated for 320 watts.

Yeah, a lot of sites call the Classic Lead 80 the G12-80, but I don't think that's correct. No where does it say that on the speaker itself.

I know this is an old thread, but I recently acquired a single G12-80 with the 444 cone. Dated 1979, so one of the first ones, it seems. Anybody who is into metal or hard rock should experience an old Celestion ROLA G1280 444 cone, IMO. This is a unique and awesome speaker for that. Skid Row is said to have used them, but Maiden and others come to mind immediately. Very different than the G12-65s from the same era - also great speakers if you find some good ones. The G12-80 is louder, clearer, and has great bottom, and a growling mid profile, with defined but slightly restrained highs. I've got it in a Friedman/Lynchbox 50 watt 1x12 combo now, and it is so damn pleasing.

I am super interested in trying these speakers one day, has anyone ran a 2 ch Recto through these?

Yes and everything else ! Very balanced speaker which means most amps sound great through them. 1979-1983 is their production lifespan.

Ridiculously punishing, tight low end, violently aggressive midrange yet I find the highs to be fairly extended and extremely defined, not restrained or subdued, but those highs are very silky so no ear splitting treble ice picks.

I have a full stack of these :D
