It's a really tough call…..i love them both dearly,and was exposed to Michael first.

But the astral physicist/ ex pothead in me votes uli just for his extended repertoire and overall jaw dropping ability.

I still freak out on polar nights and fly to the rainbow live….The amount of FUNK in his rhythm playing is not mentioned often but he just has a lot more swing and yes FUNK as in american R & B syncopation than MS-I am sure due to all of that hendrix love.

That said MS is more down to earth and grounded in hard rock..and sometimes you don't want to be challenged ?
In the end they are both gods and I feel lucky to be able to be alive to appreciate their music.I met Uli once and he signed my vinyl copy of virgin killers-as many have said he is the kindest most zen like gentle soul.

Both are awesome but Shenker just has that lil something... maybe not as technical but damn is his phrasing off the charts. Whether he wants to be melodic or balls to the walls he almost makes his guitars talk with that wah. In my top 5 guitarists of all time.
 
apples and oranges, I like them both! BUT that being said I would listen to Michael Schenker more often and can't seem to listem enough.
 
Schenker needs better representation here.

Tone alone Schenker destroys Uli.


Uli prolly has a few more chops, but can get really out there sometimes in disonance and slop.
Much prefer Michael.

I'm aa big fan of both. I think Schenker has stronger songs, but for shear ability it's Uli by far imo. He's the father of the whole shred thing imo.

Thanks for posting that! Shenker's leads give me goosebumps yowsa. The tone in that vid was off the charts. Both him and Norum make those 2205's sound like some of the best amps Marshall ever built. I dig the sound of those diodes in the circuit.

I wonder if Shenker is using a clean/distorted setup. When he hits chords sometimes, you almost hear this clean twang underneath. Really fattens the tone. That vibrato of his if just the cat's ass. As other's have mentioned, Uli may have more runs but i find his tone piercing at times, thin, and phrasing can go a lil nuts. That said, he's got some excellent tunes as well but they don't make the hair on my neck stand up like Shenker can when he is on his game. He might be simple but he's on another planet. I bet you'd be hard pressed to find a guy who doesn't appreciate Shenker after listening to these clips above.
 
Stylistically they are simply too far apart for meaningful comparisons IMO, yet they are in a very natural position to be compared. I love both players for what they've given us over the years...no winners/losers here.
 
I much prefer Uli. Schenker is a good player/writer just not that interesting.

I like how Uli goes for it. Sometimes he lands on his feet, sometimes not.

Both are cool, but Uli keeps my attention.
 
Hey Truetone500, you are a Shenker nut, how does he use the chorus pedal in his rig? I know he stacks delays , one for slap back reverb like and the other for longer spacious delays on slower leads but is the chorus pedal to split the signal into diff amps? One wet/one dry or One clean/dirty type deal?

I believe he runs his chorus in-series before the delays, but I'm not certain. Standard fare setup...
 
Uli is a great player but doesn't hold a candle to Mike.

Mike knows how to use a sonic landscape to his advantage and is an extremely tasteful player.

Like I said before, no winner or loser here, but I don't think many will argue against Uli using a far greater and more diverse sonic landscape than Michael...in fact I see that element of their playing as a "no contest" win for Uli.
 
Great link to the Uli interview. He really knows how to put into words what he thinks and feels with great eloquence. Love what he had to say about playing with speed and technique. Also interesting how he was so unhappy with how a lot of the Scorp's material turned out considering it's so beloved and thought to be kick ass by so many.

Almost an impossible choice....almost. Michael has been more steadily consistent and writes more songs that suit me but going just on tone and lead playing, what Uli accomplished with the Scorp's in the 70's is so outstanding it will always make him number 1 for me. Can't speak for Uli's solo stuff as I had no interest in hearing him sing at length :lol: :LOL:
 
Uli all the way
his vibrato and style completely influenced Yngwie (and all the Yngwie clones) but Uli had that "magic"

also, he totally rules with Asian influence in his melodies (Marty Friedmen totally took that from him)

Beyond that ULI kept progressing....he sounds like a violin (with killer vibrato) now with his high 7th string
