that would be the ultimate addition to any vai/universe/jem collection for sure

I don't blame you. Thats a classic right there. Hard to put a dollar value on it. I think his asking is not out to lunch.

That is ridiculously cool

It will be interesting to see if it actually sells and for what price.

I would love to play it for a few minutes. With everything being hand crafted it probably feels and sounds nothing like the mass produced models. It must not have been anything special if Vai never used it after the Whitesnake album.

Really cool piece! I would love to have the guitar he used for Slip Of The Tongue, but $35k is ridiculous.

Good point about why he ditched it after recording the album? Maybe he received the yellow swirl 7 string shortly after and just started using it instead?

That is crazy, Vai's own personal guitars didn't sell for that much when he sold them at auction for charity. Besides, his P&W 7 Universe with the monkey grip would probably be one of the most desirable, since it was his, is pretty much the only 7 with a monkey grip, etc. Also, who cares that it is signed? Shit, my Jem is signed. Shit, I better list it for $10,000. I mean if that was Vai's own guitar the he used to record monumental albums, then ok. If someone buys that for that amount, they need their head examined. Seriously, I think these two (at least the first one) sold for approx $5,000 at auction awhile back. They were from his Alcatrazz days and saw tons of action and photo shoots.

Uh... it was owned by vai.... its also the first production 7 string ever made as well.
I think 15k would be a good price for it perhaps.

also, it was the guitar Vai "learned" to play 7 string, and its the FIRST Ibby 7 string EVER. Can't get much cooler than that.
bigdaddyd: Read Vai's typed note in the pics, this guitar is more than just signed.

Uh, reread what I wrote and then see that you also agree with me seeing as how it is $35,000 and not 15k. I too would agree $15k would be more reasonable. It is not the first production 7 string. He is claiming it is the prototype. That is very cool if true (which I am not denying.) What I am saying is that there is Vai 7 string that is a bigger holy grail out there, and it is

gtr030.jpg

Perhaps this would bring that kind of coin, since it was so easily identified with Vai and is I think the only one with a monkey grip since there was some right's issue to use it on the Universe. I believe the monkey grip is covered on Passion and Warfare cover.

This prototype is the Daddy (or should I say "bigdaddy") to that monkey gripped swirl   :poke:

I am not debating that, or the coolness. I am saying it is not worth $35,000. Well, I suppose it is worth whatever someone pays for it, however, he has sold much cooler guitars from his personal arsenal as well as other gear for CHARITY that sold for tiny fractions of that. That is all I am saying. I am a huge fan of his, and if I had 100 million dollars, wouldn't pay 35k for that. Just saying. I would pay it for the P&W guitar though, maybe more. I was dying to bid on that Jackson when it was on Ebay, but I was broke at the time and couldn't believe it when it was in the 5k range. I have an Alcatrazz video of him ripping it up on that axe. I would friggin die to own that. I used to love all those old guitars he had. Yes, this is cool and special, but the price is insane.

No shit, thus the term prototype.

Btw, there were many prototypes. There were at least four used on the Whitesnake tour alone. Most of which were swirls without the Monkey Grip. The one with the MG was his #1 guitar and was not a prototype. Just go look on Vai.com yourself. He has them all there. This one is not there as far as I can tell, but I haven't gone through them in awhile...but if he gave it to his friend it might not be there anyway (although he has stuff up there he no longer has.)

The prototype has a wider collector appeal, not just to Vai fans. I do agree, $35K (to me) is just crazy. YOU would rather have something that Vai extensively used, many don't care about that. But, come clean man, if you had a $100 million, 35K would be chump change.

Once again, I don't need you to explain any of this to me. You and I already agree on the same thing, that $35k is insane. That is the whole thing I object to. As for 35k being chump change to someone with 100million, of course it would be, but I still wouldn't buy it for $35k, because it isn't worth it. Like I said, it isn't even one of the ones on his own site. That is because it isn't one of the ones he used regularly. I read that letter, and quite frankly don't really believe he wrote it. If I were to buy it, I sure as hell would need that authenticated. I met him and he is quite a lot more intelligent and well spoken than that letter read. Assuming everything checked out, it just doesn't have the appeal to me personally that the other ones do. It's cool if it floats your boat though.
