I have 2 8ohm cabs and currently use both 4 ohm jacks
I don't see any issue using the 16 ohm cab input for the mod

Is there any issue doing so?
Also, I have a RJM Music RG-16 http://www.rjmmusic.com/rg16.php and plan for it to do my switching between - and +

Let me k ow if there is anything I should know before performing it

Ron

Just drill another hole . . . or use the 16 Ohm. You can wire each 16 Ohm cab (except a 1x12") to 4 Ohm.

Well I have the Herbie all apart and I am ready to do the mod. One thing that concerns me though. There are 2 leads that come off of the transformer that is located on the left side of the amp, by channel number one controls. The leads come off of the pins 10 and 13 on the transformer. Should I desolder then from the transformer as well? I want to be 100% certain that I will not cause any damage by leaving those connections off of that transformer and using the 16 ohm jack for the mod. I would like to do this without drilling any holes in the chassis. Please let me know how to proceed. Thanks again

Desolder only the hot wire on the tip and save it again shorts.
Don´t desolder the ground (ring) from the transformer.

Thank you Peter
As always, such a great help!

Ron

OK Mod done!
However, I think there has been a hiccup though. I followed the directions 100% but it only seems to cut the volume, not change the tone or texture as it did before I did the mod. Also, when turning the volume for channel 2 up the store LED flickers with what I am playing, almost like a LED that indicates when an amp is clipping or not
Any suggestions before I return it back to stock??
Ron

Please post some pics of your mod and we'll see. Thanks.

Also keep in mind that

1) the speaker jacks need the ground connection to the transformer
2) the switch on the frontpanel needs to be in "-" position
3) try with a standard footswitch first

Thanks duesentrieb
Here are the pics
I think I know what might be wrong. I left the ground from the transformer on the 16 ohm speaker output jack(which is now the - or + switching jack) Do I need to move that ground over to the ground side of the 8 ohm jacks? I also took the hot lead off of the 16 ohm jack and isolated it as Peter suggested
Here is a pic--Does the ground in the green box need to be moved?

Oooooooooops ....... please connect it to the speaker ground

AHA
I thought that may have been it
I can't thank you enough Pete
By the way.....Any luck with chips for my early original Diezel foot controller?

OK
Ground wire moved
And the mod works like a charm! - and + works and sounds the way it does and no more store light flickering
100% Thanks again for everyones help

Enjoy.

I'm switching mine via a G-Major and a Columbus - so the whole rig is midi controlled.

EXACTLY duesentrieb
Mine is all MIDI as well being that I am using the RG16 and my Columbus

Sorry to wake up an old thread...
I´m contemplating this exact setup aswell. Was dead set on an Einstein, but since I found out about the Herbert mod I can´t seem to get it off my mind. Was it hard to set up and does it work ok?
Channel 2 is what I love the most with Herbert and to be able to switch between the +/- modes via midi would definitely sell me on it.

Just run two wires from the manual switch to a jack (insulated) on the back (drill a hole). And ground the "ground" position of the jack at the speaker grounds.

Oh sorry, didn´t mean the mod itself. I´ll leave that to a qualified tech.
Just the general setup with the G-Major effects using the relayswitch and Herbert combined.
Haven´t used anything like that previously. I´ve mainly played with just one-channel-amps and adjusting sound with the vol.control so this will be a big change. My main concern would be stability when bringing it out on the road.

Well the Major has a jack (stereo) called "relay switching" or so. Just hook a mono cable between this and the new jack of your Herbert.
In the utility menu you can programm and store the relay for switching. So with this and midi hooked between the two units you can controll the midi switchable functions (ch1/2/3, Loop, mester2 and mute) and with the Major the +/- also via relay with midi.

Allright, thanks alot for the info. I really appreciate it!
Now just have to decide between the Herbert and the Hagen...
