Hey all, have a budget for one of these two. Need a portable head for clean, hard rock and some shredding solos (no metal). Obviously the shiva would need a boost but shivas are so awesome from the clips I heard. Can anyone weigh in? Thanks!

excuse my ignorance for a sec, but dont shiva's have a built in boost?

Even with the boost it's not the same high gain as the 5150. I would meet a boost. Also the midi control in the evh helps a ton...

but you said no metal? and you mention one of the highest gain amplifiers in existence? :dunno:

sounds to me like your mind is already made up before you even ask the question

No it's really not! Just love the van Halen lead sound that's all. But ive been after a shiva for two years! But the evh! But the shiva! But the evh! But the shiva!

If you love the EVH lead sound the 50W can do that chirpy low-gain tone great, and it has a resonance knob stock unlike the 120W models (yet)

shiva can do alot of things, EVH tone has not been one of them that i have ran across, maybe someone who has had time and owns one can chime in here to better help you.

If that is the case i would recommend the 50W 5150 III based on what you're looking for

Thank you for all your help! I don't think the shiva can do it either, but the shiva has that lead sound that is so "commerical" and perfect sounding. Some People compare it to a jcm800 but I don't really hear that. Also I assume build quality in the Bogner will be much much better.

I would suggest Shiva for the simple fact of versatility. I set the tonestack on my Shiva at noonish and have 4 different od's on my pedalboard for different flavors. My new band is doing some VH, and I use an OCD with an EVH 90, and a delay in the loop. Sounds tits!

You can fo from spankin country to heavy rock IMO, and with pedals, it's limitless...

I could have had either , the Evh won , money wasn't an issue Infact I sold my 101b extc

bump. Anyone else have any insight here? The EVH sounds like the amp I should get price/gigging wise, but the Bogner is the amp i always wanted though less practical....

I'll pass on the Shiva unless it's a 20th. Even at that I didn't find it to be what I was looking for. A great amp, no doubt and full respect to it. I liked the 101B a ton more but really, I am in no need for a 100watt head.

I went with the 5150 III mini and it is exactly what I was looking for. It had all of the features I wanted, namely the 3 channels, the resonance feature, the midi-switching, etc. They packed a lot into it for a great price. Once you get over the whole where it is built thing, then it becomes an easy choice.

I'm certainly not aversed to made in china or whatever for philosophical reasons, just practical gig-worthy ones. Thank u for the input

Bogner will be built better , but when I tried a shiva I thought it was great but thought I would still need an overdrive for solos , Infact it was an amp I was really interested in getting for a while as I couldn't find anything I liked for my band , anyway the mini 5150 requires no pedels for solos , I was a bit worried cos I tried some 100 watt 5150 3 before and thought the blue channel was lacking gain wise , but with my 50 watter it's perfect . Bare in mind I just sold the extc still got peavey 5150 , Marshall yjm , carvin legacy 1 , Marshall dsl … I have all these at hand , and love gigging the mini head it's fab . Well in my opinion anyway .

Personally I'd go 5153 mini. I owned a Shiva for about 6 months and not for a lack of gain did I sell it. I found the bottom end to be lacking quiet a bit and too saggy for my tastes. You can boost it but I couldn't find a boost I thought sounded good...especially for the money.

Shiva is great with lower gain classic stuff. I loved mine but couldn't get a decent 80s metal tone, which I loved to get. The EVH is a cheaper amp, but I guess that will be new, so with warranty etc.

Wow I can't find a single 5150 mini available online anyway now. Anyone know where I can buy one? I may go with the Bogner either way but I'd like to have the option..
