What crosses y'all's mind when you see a classified that's grotesquely overpriced? Like pure insanity priced. What could possibly be going through these people's minds? I've literally laughed at my computer screen at a few of em.

Seen some of them lately on here haven't we?

Either people knowingly baiting for a big fish or people too lazy to look around and search for market value.

Some people just refuse to take a hit. Truth is, no used gear is worth more than 60% of it's new price.

They think that just because they price something at less than it is new, that the buyer is getting a good deal. Delusional tightwads.

Not in all cases
You can't compare a Diezel amp, for example, and a 1960A cab
One is much more easy to find used than the other (< offer = higher price)

Not really, I'm looking at a VH4 right now for $2500. That's close to 60% off new.

Every item is different. The 60% rule doesn't apply to all. Everything has a market price, it's the people that are waaaay over the market price that boggle the mind!

One they're most likely tire kickers or two out of their gourd.

My favorite is when a good sits for a lengthy amount of time and the buyer refuses to come down on an already absurd price .

  right! After the 43rd bump you might want to come down from your 5% discount off the new price....

I mean, jeez I'd buy your cab if it had speakers and didn't cost 10 percent more than the original price.

Just saying.

Hint, hint....the Cameron stuff isn't commanding big dollar anymore.

I was watching a guitar for the past few weeks. When I originally asked a few questions of the seller he gave me a resounding "the price is firm at $4,000". It just sold for $2,195. At least he was fairly agressive with his price drops but I smile about the firm $4,000 thing.

compare the prices here to any ebay item. i'd buy here anyday.

I agree with you 99%. We are talking about the few "out there" prices.
Rig talk classifieds are awesome!

I think the 60% rule is pretty accurate for average quality gear. For top-of-the-line/custom stuff it varies widely.......dependent primarily on supply and demand.

People who ask ludicrous prices either paid too much to begin with, or aren't living in the same world the rest of us are. I see these same people re-listing and bumping their ads over and over. You'd think after the 23rd bump shit would sink in.....but it doesn't. :loco:

I always sell my used gear for half the price it's going for brand new unless it's in horrible condition but I take great care of my gear and rarely gig.

Although I agree with the overall premise of the OP, I disagree with some other comments in this thread.

For example.....

1.) Just because something hasn't sold after 25 bumps doesn't mean it's overpriced. It might just be an expensive item and nobody of the board can currently afford it, or currently has interest. For example, when I parted out my rack rig in 2011, I probably bumped my thread 40 times. However, I never needed to lower my prices to ultimately sell the gear. It was selling slowly because it was all high end (e.g., Bogner Fish, Soldano X88R, Egnater M4, etc.) and, therefore, expensive. Contrary to popular belief, a lot of people aren't comfortable or quick to shell out $2k on gear. Anyways, it all sold. "Bump count" was irrelevant to the prices being asked.

2.) When it comes to high end gear, the concept of 'market value' tends to go out the window somewhat. Sure, everybody has a general feel for what some of this stuff typically sells for, but if someone has, say, a MINT used 20th XTC and wants to ask 25% off the new price, what's the big deal? Someone out there might be ecstatic to get a next-to-new amp at 25% off the cost new. The bottomfeeders will wait for one to pop up at 50% off. The bottom line is, when you're dealing in expensive, high end/boutique gear, the 'market value' comes down to what a purchaser is willing to pay, and every purchaser has a different threshold of 'reasonability' when it comes to used prices.
