so, i got a new noise gate (i've been without one for a while). MXR Smart Gate. I like it a lot so far. works great out in front of the amp.

but, apparently I've never tried to use a noise gate in the loop an amp and I'm having trouble getting this setup.
are there any tips for setting up a noise gate in the loop of an amp?

if it matters there is a send and return volume...

thanks ahead of time!

The Smart Gate works pretty well in front of the amp but I have not had good results in the loop. The hi trigger button should be pushed "in" for loop use. It is far more effective in the loop on the hiss setting to remove preamp hiss if you have another gate in front than it is use as a full gate. I used it this way with a decimator in the loop. your mileage may vary.

I used the smart gate for years in front of my amp until I saw this youtube video:

I did the same test myself and I was appalled at the effect on the pick attack. needless to say I have been using my decimator in front ever since. most people wouldn't notice but I can get obsessive about these things.
