JJ or Tung Sol will do the trick.

Thanks Steve!

I always hear the jj are dark but they had a character i didn't like. I have had good results with the tung sol in the past, guess I'll get one again!

Sovtek 12AX7-LPS

Make sure you buy them tested and burned in, they can sometimes be microphonic otherwise. But they are dark and sound great when trying to tame the brightness of an amp

Mullard NOS or ei

Lol i actually have a Mullard nos i haven't tried in it yet, thanks for reminding me that was a dark tube!

Tung Sol - I used one in my Fender Prosonic and it really helped.

What tubes are in it now?

I'm using Sino EL34's and Sino 12ax7B's nd it's the dakest combination yet. I've used SED's, Mullard PT's and jj pre's, Tung Sol PT's and a mix of chinese, jj's, sovteks, EH's and whatever else I had laying around for pre's.

In my opinion the Tung Sol power and pre tubes sound like crap in the QR. VERY bright and glassy...I hated them

The Sino's for a cheap pos tube to many have actually sounded the best. They have been very reliable too...lots of gigs and -0- problems. Scott and Josh at Splawn said the Sino power tubes are dark and the Sino pre's are a tad bright so the offset each other and sound really good. I bought them and couldnt be happier. I must say though that I was very skeptical at first when I opened the boxes and saw a very generic looking set of tubes...but man do they sound good

+1

I don't find the TungSol to be dark at all. It's certainly brighter and more midrangey sounding compared to the Sovtek 12AX7-LPS and JJ 12AX7.

+2 on the Tung-sol being on the brighter side.

just goes to show you, that some people are crazy!

ahh, i mean hear things deferently. :scared:

+3

I've always found that Tung Sol's are brighter than JJ's especially in the V1 position.

Well fine, y'all be like that... When you read about me jumpin' bridge cuz of the lack of love on RT and me gettin' dissed for my recommendin' a Tung Sol for a darker preamp... Well.... Well.... Ya. That's right, game over man, some real pretty shit now aren't we!!

:hys: V.

I've never gotten into changing out preamp tubes. I tweak enough on my tone as it is :D

But then I always think-meh, could be fun to experiment. Having a box full of preamp tubes :dunno:

i've got a mullard 12ax7 - which i think sounds like a tung sol with a little bit lower gain - in V1, a tung sol in V2, and jj's in the other two pre-amp slots, and KT77 power tubes, and i really like the way it sounds.
i think the KT77's sound more chunky, and less bright than EL34's do. i could be wrong though lol.
