Anybody see this yet? They released the Donnington 1990 DVD last month. I'm wondering if it's worth getting. I remember really digging Vai at the time, and saw the concert in Cincinnati -- Vai was awesome.

This thread once the west coast wakes up will get interesting :D

Most men do not like Vai's time with a younger David Coverdale and will tell you about thin tone, over the top cheese, and mystical overload

Deeper the Love solo is STILL one of the top solos ever.

I dug Vai's work with Whitesnake...his tone not as much (but it wasn't as awful as some would have you believe IMO...especially given the flavors of the day). Judgement Day was a great tune in all it's Zep-like glory.

I totally agree. For the time, it was cool. The processed tone and slick production was where it was at back then. The concert itself was great. . .Vai was at the height of his guitar-stardom, and put on a great show.

I THINK Vai did his work at the Mothership and yeah it was at the height of monster racks.

Vai is fantastic in a way but sounds totally clinical to me. He´s like a machine. Whitesnake is Mickey Moody and Bernie Marsden. It was ok when John Sykes was with them also.

Saw the tour with Vai at a very rainy Jones beach from 4rd row center. I was a little bit of a Vai fanboi at the time and IIRIC, I liked the show but wasnt blown away... then again, I feel the same way about the Album

I remember during the solo to Cheap N Nasty, Vai's out front on stage, and someone threw a bedsheet banner up onstage at him, and it was about to land on his guitar (muting the strings), and he grabs it with his right hand, and finished the solo one-handed. I always wondered if that was planned. It was too perfect, and unbelievable!

The west coast is UP!

A real master would never let a piece of cloth stop him from soloing ;)

Rupe, well, he didn't let it stop him, he caught it and solo'd with one hand. But, I get it. . .that Gatton clip kills me!

agreed, Eric Gales at 3:10

interesting topic -

I still consider the 1989/1990 Line up and their concert September 1st 1990 in Mannhaeim/Germany
as the best, my personal No.1 ever!

I was looking all the past years for a DVD or Video from that era - obviously it finally happened

Thanks for this thread, I'am idot enough to miss the DVD release.... :aww:

I've got the DVD. I REALLY wish I could get my money back.

It's bad. I don't even know where to start so I'll start with the sound. Absolutely terrible. Blown away that a band that big couldn't record a decent live show. Video. Absolutely terrible. Quality and camera work.

Vai. Lame. And I LOVE Vai. Seems to me that they were under rehearsed. Like "we're so great lets just go up there and play". Maybe I'm wrong. Maybe they just weren't that good.

Vandenberg. Kinda mystical guy. Heard of him for years but never really HEARD him. Just that one solo off the '87 album. Don't like his tone or vibrato. He's not a powerful player at all. Weak.

David (love the guy). Struggled to hit anything. He has great tone, but just wasn't "on".

Sarzo and Aldridge were great.

Just very dissapointing overall.

I really wish they'd put a Sykes/Whitesnake DVD out. Or the earlier band from Slide It In. Great band. These newer versions are hollow shells. Sorry.

Just my opinion, you may like the DVD though I kinda doubt it.

Dang, that sounds bad. I thought the video above of Slip of the Tongue was a good performance. Is that lousy to you or is the DVD sub-par compared to that?

As far as the Slip of the Tongue album, I think it's a great album and love Vai's work throughout.

Wow. It's been a long time since I've heard any Slip of the Tongue. Sailing Ships and Wings of the Storm. Cool stuff. Lots of cool guitar work all over that CD.

Badronald is very tough to please from what I have seen from past posts, he has a focused taste :D

PErsonally I would never purchase this.. I have the 2006 live DVD with Beach and Aldrich and it is awesome. This is horrible. I also think Vai is total cheeseball and the songs are horrible here. Very messy rythmically. Vandenberg's solo in still of the night sucks. At least Vai's is good... i remember passing up on this tour when I was younger and I'm glad I did. This sucked. Aldridge on teh drums was the best part!
