Since I have mostly Marshall type amps I want to get some g12-65's to experiment with. This cab is for sale local. I know the asking price is too high. What's the going price these days?

The cab is super clean. It's a 1980 and labeled "100w" although it is really 260w. I've heard this is common.

Something's not original, I think. A checkerboard could have G12-65s but not with those labels.

I bought my 81 JCM800 cab with g12-65's off of ebay a couple years ago for $400 plus $75 shipping. Same cab with black grill cloth. I hated the 65's so I sold them for more than I paid for the cab and replaced them with better speakers.

Somewhere in the $500-700 range at best.
His asking price is crazy. That's borderline Rola / Pulsonic G12H30-55Hz 4x12 stuff.

I have him down to $750. Maybe that's still overpaying...

As far as the speakers not being original, I think they very well could be original to the cab. Apparently Marshall was known for using up inventory of old tags even with newer speakers.

Those are the new tags. A cab that old would have black labels I think.

FWIW, in my area there has been one w/ old 65s on CL for $750 for quite a while. But there is also an old straight with vented 75s for $400...but 6 hours away.

I had a 79 checker with the 100w label and Marshall labeled 65s. Best cab I ever had, sweet tone. I've had 4 more and none had that tone. Bought it for 350 out of Fargo 6 yrs ago, mint shape like that one.
That said, an 80 cab could have leftover checker and they could have run out of the Marshall labeled 3120 cones and went with the newest celestion labeled version. Remember there were like 40 different variants of 65s during the years 78-83 when they were produced. That cab could be all original and looks to be perfect. Maybe a little high but damn that looks new.

He said the cones are most likely 1777's per his best recollection. Supposedly those are preferable. Anything else I should be looking for?

I had a 90's 1960 Classic cab with greenbacks years ago. It sounded phenomenal but I ended up selling it. Haven't found a greenback cab that sounds as good yet. They seem to be hit and miss.

I have a 1974 Marshall cab with G12M creambacks that is the best GB cab I've played. I've tried 2 blackback cabs and they didn't measure up. Those early 90s Classic cabs are nice but rare. You should look for a Marshall 425a or b cab, they have the G12C GBs that are very nice. I would say that was the 2nd best GB cab I've had, behind my present 74. The 425 cabs are the Vintage Modern or Hendrix cabs and came in Black or Purple tolex.

^ as far as I know, the 1777 cone just means they're not the bass cones, and you don't want bass cone G12-65s.

I think it's an all original cab, I'd be tempted myself if I were local but I'm an admitted 65 fanatic. I think you'll love them with your Marshall circuits.

I don't know, I nabbed a clean 1981 Marshall cab with the dreaded bass cones, sounded just like any other 65 cab to me with a little more bass response. I'd heard that they were garbage but sounded good to me.

I had a Two Rock 1x12 cab with their g12-65 speaker. I put my amp through just for fun and was in love with sound. Tight, punchy and no harshness. I can only imagine what 4 of them sound like.

Those speakers are most likely original to the cab.

I've often thought those Marshall employees over at Milton Keynes may have had too many pints to drink during their lunch breaks... considering the number of inconsistencies Marshall has had with their amps and cabs over the decades.

Price is fair too.

I think $750 or more is a good price in that shape. I have a beat one Ill sell you for $500. It sounds really good

G12-65's? Slant or straight?

That cab is pretty clean for that age, and the wiring looks correct. And yes, Marshall frequently put the wrong silver labels on the back panels for the power handling. I had one from 79/80 that had the same 100w on the back. I would get date codes for those speakers, and check to make sure they haven't been reconed as well, which will require checking the cones, unmounting them, etc. You might be able to see the cone #'s with a compact mirror and flashlight, and check to make sure they have the large 4" wide dustcaps though the grill cloth.

$750 would be a decent price if it's original, not reconed, etc.

$1050 is a tad high.

Just my .02.

FWIW, you can stick your phone in there and take pics of cone codes/etc if you can't see them. Can't tell you how many obscured/non-visible labels/cone codes/etc I've been able to read from doing that. Might take a few tries.

Here's a pic of the 1777 cone code on a G12-65. Ya, it looks beat but it was $40 and sounds great.
