Hi guys... I know there's lots of threads already on the effects loops of the VH4. I read a lot of them and found some great info but some things are still not clear to me so I would appreciate your input!

I have a VH4 (amazing amp!) and would like to have the following (midi-switchable) channel configuration:

1- CH1 dry
2- CH1 with reverb and delay
3- CH3 dry
4- CH3 with delay

I am thinking of buying two (used) Boss pedals (dd-7 and rv-5) to use them as follows:
Delay: send 2 -> delay -> parallel return
Reverb: in channel insert of CH1

I think I could then just use the 'Send 2' switch and 'Channel insert' switch to produce all the combinations above...

Now my question: Will this work, i.e. can you use channel inserts AND parallel effects loop at the same time so you can 'add' the two effects? Anything else that might give me problems in such a setup?

Thanks a lot for your help!

Jan

The switching aspect of your question will work fine. Whatever you program the Send 2 or Channel Inserts to do, they will do.
If I recall, the Send 2 loop is a serial loop, so depending on your effects, you may have a drop in output volume.
Adversely, the Channel Inserts are much louder, but depending on the effects output may work better. Either way, your covered.

The send 2 on the VH-4 is a parallel loop... and completely handicapped IMO... I couldn't get any of my effects to sound good through the parallel loop... and the channel inserts are a good idea on paper.. but impractical in real life... although if you are just playing this thing at home, it's a really cool feature...

Also, what you are talking about will work fine...you will definitely have to spend some time with your levels due to using the channel loops on the send 2 parallel loop, but yes you can have the channel inserts AND the send 2 loop on at the same time...

Guys, thanks for the replies so far! So it seems that it should work... I'll take care with the levels etc., and if I do go this route I'll let you know how it went (first have to get the effects etc....)

Cheers

Mizati,

did You really kill the dry sound on Your effect units when You
are in parallel mode ?

Parallel inserts work great for me on both the VH4 & Herbert. and the channel inserts were super handy in the studio.

Yea peter, I used several different types of effects... regular boss pedals with the mix all the way up, some rack stuff of my friends, also gear with kill dry effects... I just think parallel loops aren't for me that's all.. I'm not saying the VH-4 parallel loops has something inherently wrong with it... I just meant I personally couldn't get my effects to sound the way I liked... I absolutely loved the VH-4 man... but the Herbert is just "home" for me...

Hi again,

to clarify, I will use this setup in practice AND live settings so it is important for me that it works flawlessly. However now that I know it is possible to combine the loops I expect that it will (at least from the VH4-side of things).

Concerning the Boss effects; if I turn the mix ("E-LEVEL") to MAX, will it really kill the dry sound? I guess this is a necessary requirement to run it/them in the parallel loop, right?

Thanks again,

Jan
