VHT/Fryette Pitbull UL vs Sig X

Those that are familiar with both, can you please give me your thoughts on both?
 
Sig X is more versatile and does vintage sounds better.
UL is more modern voiced and a stiffer feel.
Both can do the modern stuff....
If I never played anything but metal I might be more into the UL.

Don't get me wrong.... Both of these amps can do the entire range of gain and styles. They are just voiced and feel a little different.

The lead and rhythm channel of the Sig X is very similar to and designed after the two high gain channels of the Pittbull's. The idea was to be able to get all the various voicings that the Pittbull's had over the years.... Then add in more control.
They are not identical.... But very similar.
The power amp of the Sig X is similar to one half of the 2/90/2 poweramp.
The clean channels are very different....
The UL is more like your typical clean channel. Stays pretty clean.
The Sig X clean is more like a NMV amp.... It can do clean.... But when pushed it very much reminds me of vintage Hiwatt amps.
 
Which is easier to play leads on? Which is more saturated?
 
The Sig X is easier to play.
Saturation on both is about the same. The lead channel on both can do liquid.
 
Want a Sig X. Unfortunately its gonna have to wait. To much cash going to many places. But yeah i have that itch to add to the amp collection and VHTs have been on my radar forever
 
The UL is VERY stiff and unforgiving. I had one for about twelve years. A lot of people find the UL under gained as well. Actually all the fryette stuff is that way. Ime. I play Engl now. Much better for me.

Owned a PB and played a Savage 120. Liked the VHT UL i tried better
 
The Deliverance & Sig X is more forgiving than the Pittbull. They are still very tight like all Fryette amps. All of them show a lot of detail of what you are doing with your hands.
As always if you can try before you buy is always a good idea.

Those are the models that give Engl it's reputation for being processed/overcompressed and all the other negativity they tend to get. You should check out the Artist Edition or Invader 150 instead.
 
I dig the ultralead more than the sig-x. Guess it's more of a feel thing.
 
I had a Sig X awhile back. It's a great amp. Currently have a UL (3rd one actually) that I'll keep forever. This amp is not just a metal amp. There is no tone this amp can't do. I don't get how people can say they are too stiff or dry.
 
People I know personally that do not like it is because they do not have very good technique and do not play very clean. Most amps hide sloppy playing more than Fryette amps.
The articulation and definition can have a magnifying effect on mistakes.

One of my favorite things about all of the Fryette amps is they can do any type of sound or style. My taste is very wide. I play more funk and R&B than anything. .... But play a little of everything.

In what ways, if any, does your UL out do your Friedman?
 
If you're wanting a VHT get the Deliverance!!!! It's the best I've played. Very touch sensitive amp I've played. My buddy and I did a test between the 120 and 60 and the 120 blew it away!!! :rock: I had 2 pitbulls and they went for sale very fast. Just not for me.
 
I see you are a Lynch fan. A friend of mine won a contest in the early 90's to play on Lynch's solo album. While he was out in L. A. Recording his solo he asked Lynch what he thought the best new amp out there was. Lynch told him he liked the VHT Pitbull Classic. I bought a Pitbull classic ( EL 34) with EQ and thought it was great. Plenty of gain IMO with tons of definition. Very touch sensitive. Definitely amplified flubs. At the time I also had an Ecstacy and my brother had an SLO. The VHT was just as good as both. I will say the Soldano was the most consistent. Sounded the same every time you turned it on. The Bogner and VHT sometimes seemed to sound different even though I hadn't touched any knobs. Looking to get a new amp myself. Things got lean in 2008-2012 for me. Got a couple Anderson's coming and need a good amp. I've been thinking 20th Ecstacy but the simplicity of an SLO is in my head too.
 
I personally feel if the Pitbull line had a slightly different visual aesthetic, they would have been more widely accepted by guitarists as much more than a 'metal' amp.

I can't say just yet. I literally just got the Friedman a couple of days ago. I haven't messed with the Friedman enough. Or tried a/b'ing the amps to see how close I can get them.

I agree with you, actually. The Invader 2 and Ironball I have are the models I was referring to. Should've said that. The UL is better than the PB and savage, imo but doesn't do what the Invader 2 does by a long shot. However they really are on the opposite sides of the spectrum. I still have my Gp3 and run it through my switcher so I can swap preamps with the press of a button so I can still get that UL/CLX tone when I want. :rock:
To the OP, the UL is the better amp for sure if you want modern. Go Sig x for more versatility.

I also prefer the Deliverance to the UL. Owned a UL for about 4 years, and also both D60 and 120. Ended up keeping the 60 watter. The simpler signal path i guess helps keep the tone thick and juicy on that head. The 120 sounded close to the UL's orange channel(the best channel in that amp). Still preferred the way the 60 saturates faster than the 120. Planning to try a Sig:X soon.
