I have a VHT/Fryette Pittbull Ultralead with boost and EQ. I was offered an Engl Savage SE for it. I have never played through an Engl Savage and was wanting some good advice. Would it be a fair trade? Does the Engl get as much gain? Does it sound as brutal as the Ultralead? What is the best "all around" amp? Your input is GREATLY appreciated

I would go for the Savage all day long. I have never played either, but have heard alot of clips and done research on both.

I have a Pitbull100cl, I know its not a UL but I imagine in the same tonal range? Minus lots of balls and KT88?

Would defintiely be a fair trade on your end.

I have seen UL's going for $1,600 used. The Savage is worth more for sure and is probably way more brutal.

I dont know man. The Ul is a total different beast than the CL. It has alot more gain but the CL is still a monster. Its just hard for me to get rid of the UL. Especially not knowing what the Savage sounds like???

The UL is fucking beastly. The Savage SE is pretty sick as well. There's 2 main differences that you should be the first thing you think about. The UL is pretty Dry sounding. But with that dryness you gain that SUPER open sound that has a nice wide range that is very alive. The Savage is very wet and compressed sounding. It is also alot darker then the UL. As for amount of gain.... I play death metal and would never turn either distortion level past 1 oclock lol. They both have plenty on tap. You want something more "wet" but also more compressed or do you want to keep that massive openness but have it more on the dry side? I love Steve Fryettes amps and I also really enjoy my engl amp and cabs. I would have a really hard time choosing... But I think I would keep the UL. Just my 2 cents :D

I owned the Savage.....heard the UL in an ampfest.....
I really preffer the ENGL myself. Just like the overall tone better. But everyone is different.

Woah- Personally.. if someone offered me an Engle for my pit, I'd have a hard time pretending not to be offended. Then I'd "graciously" decline the offer. I mean, unless you and the UL just don't jive.

Hey Maddnotez, where are these UL/CLX going for $1600?? lemme at 'em!!

I have seen several UL go for $1600 or less in the last 6 months. CLX have been more.

:) I like the Fryette better .... just personal taste.

Have they been going through R-T? I've seen a few CLX's go around $2200 and up, which I guess isn't absolutely terrible, but I still have to factor in AK shipping- Not cheap.  :aww:

I owned the engl se, savage 12O and vht ul and my fav is the vht, i love the vht tone and voicing and how tight it feels and how clear sounding the gain is.

Shweet, Thanks! -Sorry to hijack the thread.. yeah, uhh.. UL for the win!

Maybe Im getting gas again.

Is the UL that much of a difference from the CL100?

Never played the Savage SE, but I own the Savage 120 and it's a great amp

Yeah man, I play death/deathcore type music too. I know the UL costs quite a bit more but has a lesser resale value. The UL has a MONSTROUS sound with the EQ on and the gain set just right. Clean channel isnt all that but I dont ever use it anyways. It does have that dry sound which is what I really liked about it at first but I have also been itchin to try a Savage for awhile! I have heard good things about them! I know the FB cab sounds killer with every amp I have played it through. The UL also has alot of balls due to the 4 KT88's in the power section. Im pretty sure the Savage only has 2 KT88's? Believe it or not, I really miss the sound of my old Madison Divinty 2 for the death type stuff. It had its own unique sound I havent ever heard from any other amp. Im torn man. I know once I let go of the UL I will probably never get another one. Hmmm. Decisions decisions

I am a VHT fanboy, so sorry, I am biased :D

UL ALL THE FUCKING WAY!!!! Sorry, but I love the Engl SE for what it does, I just personally much prefer the more open, and dry sound of the UL. The UL, when setup right, is the most brutal freakin amp on the planet I have ever heard, next to the natas, which is very similiar. I could talk for days about my UL, I just love it to death, my all time favorite amp. I have 3 amps, the UL, the herbert, and a 6505, and I love them all for what they do, but the UL is my alltime favorite, bar none. I run it with the master around 2 or 3 oclock, channel volume to taste, and it just phenominal. It is absolutely THE BEST live amp I have ever owned as well, NOTHING cuts like a VHT. If you are used to the VHT tone live, you will be disappointed in that aspect with the SE. I like the Engl tone for some things, but I just don't jive especially well with any of them, except maybe the blackmore. The girth, and massive tone, and just in your face sound of the UL is unmatched, UL FOR THE WIN!!!!!!!

Dude! Your response is making me want to SCHLAPPP that guy in the forehead just for asking me to trade my UL! You should be a salesman for Fryette! I agree with everything you said about the UL. EVERYTHING. Im just GAS'N and the inner gear-whore is trying to unveil its ugly head. I guess Im just gonna jam the UL for a few hours and remind myself why I fell in love with it in the 1st place (as soon as I get it back anyways).
