....how hard are those fuckers to find? I rarely see them pop up.

....how much do they cost?

Anyone have one and love it ? I've owned a UL and LOVED it.....and I'm sure I may like the preamp just as much or better since I'm running with EL34's and I tend to prefer the VHT CL tone to the UL.

I have a couple and love them.
They have not been made in a long time, and they are getting rare.
I do have a friend that is selling his.
If you love the UL and CL/CLX, then you will love the GP3 even more combined with the power amp.

Meh, kind of modern and strange to me. It never sounded as good as a VHT head IMO(and yes, I was using it with a 2150).

It's just not my bag. It heats up like crazy too. I mean, it sounded good, but there are LOTS of preamps I prefer.

Agreed. This was my finding as well after owning GP3's on two different occassions. It was ok but there are many other preamps I'd take over it.

It seems quite a few people are not very fond of the GP3.....strange.

I've owned many myself.

The GP3 is the most head like sounding out of all that I have ever tried.
You can easily nail the UL and CLX to the tee when combined with the 2/90/2 and 2/50/2
It's the only preamp I've ever seen truly react just like a head to me.
I have A/B'd them with the UL, CLX, Deliverance and you can dial them in exact without question

So, why do all the other people that seem to dislike them not like them?

Also, how much is your friend offing his for? I doubt I can afford it now...I'm thinking more of late January, but I guess I could always sell my guitar is an opportunity arose....since they are near impossible to find one.

You must have a special GP3 with some kind of mojo.

IMO, my M4 and Fish sound better AND more amp-like than the GP-3 in every sense.

like, hands down.

It sounds cold, kind of modern, and strange.

just unappetizing. It's like a bag of millet.

BTW, the graphic EQ is completely worthless. wrong bands. Gigantic sweeps.

I really tried to like it. It wasn't cheap, either.

no mid-gain, whatsoever.

The redeeming factor: It had Midi. I don't know why Bogner won't take a hint.

I would be interested in an M4 but, I'm not sure I like the idea of modular preamps etc....

and the Fish probably isn't going to get high gain enough for me....plus, I've never been too fond of any Bogner, just my opinion.

The only other preamp I'd even sniff at other than the GP3, M4, and Fish is probably the Peters Hydra.

1. There's nothing to be afraid of with the modular concept.

2. What's wrong with your Mak 4? I've been dying to try one of those.

There is NOTHING wrong with my Mak4....I'm not even thinking about selling that thing.

However, my Poweramp IS Stereo......so, I mine as well take advantage of that.

Which is why I want to decide on one more preamp that'll mate well with the Mak4 (which is why I lean towards the GP3 bc I find amps with similar tone/gain structure seem to mix the best ).

Also, with all the module mods for the Egnater I may feel a bit overwhelmed. However, the sheer versatility of the M4 is extremely attractive....as I know there is a mod for a Cobra tone :)

If you really want to take advantage of your stereo poweramp, buy a fx unit and utilize the stereo spread you get from it.

Very strange take on it since the Midgain tones and EQ are it's strong points.
Of course it has the super tight high gain which can also be easily modded for more gain.
I think something was wrong with the one you had or something.
But then again, I love the VHT/Fryette rip your face off, smooth and tight high gain, and I love the warm and full mid gain tones it has.
And the clean is stellar.
The EQ is extremely sensitive, and is the same exact one that's in the UL/CLX etc
I think you had one that someone went and done broke on ya

I had a GP3 modded preamp, combined with a 292 power amp, I absolutely loved the tone, very dynamic and juicy and responsive. The problem was, that it got too hot and would shut down during rehersals and shows. The power amp was a first gen 292 and I had problems with that too, so off they went. I later found out Steve Fryette corrected the over heating problem with a little fan inside the preamp. I kinda wish I still had it now, Ida done the fan mod, Ive had just about every VHT/Fryette head made, and nothing ever sounded quite as good as the preamp imo. Its like a cross between the Sig X and Pitbull......

Steve Fryette most likely wouldn't have discontinued the GP3 if he thought is was a good product.
I had a GP3 for 3 days and returned it. Didn't like it at all!

..........Even though I love preamps to death,I have to agree w/ the last comment. The Fish is the bomb....

For the prices GP3's are going these days, I'd just buy a used U-L or CLX. It cost less than getting a GP3 and a VHT power amp. I had the GP3 and a 2/50/2 at the same time as a U-L. I still have the U-L (and sold the GP3 & 2/50/2) years later.

Same here ... But like all the Fryette gear.
