Had no intention of buying one of these but was browsing amplifier auctions on ebay that were about to end and saw one of these in great condition for sale stuck at about $1350 with less than 10 minutes to go and could not resist so put in a maximum bid of $1650 and lo and behold I won the thing for $1576. Wow I feel like such an amp hog, almost feel guilty as I have a used SLO incoming this week as well. Are these pretty much the same as the newer branded Fryette ones? Never played a Fryette or VHT and never see them where I live.

AMAZING amps, definetely in my top 5 amps I've played..... congrats and enjoy.

Killer score at that price and yes, they are no different the Fryette branded ones (provided it's less than 10 years old - I think they were revised around that time).

juggy told me to get a UL for years. he kept saying "that is your amp." man, was he right. best amp i own.

Did you have to pay shipping on top of that? $1600 seems to be about the going rate these days on those amps.

Steve,
Between this and the SLO you are in for a real treat. Book some quality time with these 2 monsters. These are two of the best high-gain channel switching amps ever made. The VHT/Fryette UL & CLX are really under-priced right now, simply due to the economics of the market. I owned a VHT UL about 8 years ago, and my new 2011 Ultra-Lead sounds pretty darn close... if my memory from 8 years ago is correct. Enjoy!
:D

Total with shipping included is $1625 so I don't think thats too bad if your saying $1600 is the going rate, I've seen used ones go for a lot more, how do they compare to the clx? Gonna be a good week.

Those are great amps for sure I miss mine. You have to be on, as you can hear every note you hit or in my case miss for sure... One of the very best for sure.

I was watching that auction.. good score.. looks like a killer amp

Congratulations ...

I pretty much have only been using Fryette & THD amps for several years.

"CLX has a single 12AX7 driver stage, a different power transformer, a different output transformer and Dual Class Mode. It breaks up easier and has a bit more give - besides the EL34 voice.

UL does not have DualClass switch. Never did. Neither model has ever had Enhance Mode - the switchable tube/ss rectifier function.

The differences between the 2 models has varied over time, but has been stable over the last roughly 10 years. See: http://www.fryette-users.com/forums/sho ... the-vht-ul

Difference between the D60 and D120 is the driver stage. The 120 has a 2-tube driver/PI stage similar to the UL. The 60 has the single stage like the CLX. Preamp voicing is the same, but because of the difference in output and driver stage, the 60 sounds more pissed off compared to the 120 which sounds more like a bulldozer coming down your street."
