pretty damn cool.. that drummer kicks all sorts of ass. I like around 2;43 where it connects between him and the drummer in such a way..

1:36 FTW

Very cool! Dude could flat out melt faces! It's not so much my thing, as far as the music composition/jam aspect but damn he could play. I like how Tosin from AAL takes this shred style and makes it very melodic and musical in a structured yet chaotic kind of way. Cool post.

My favorite "shredder" . IMO the best who ever was a shredder.
This video is the greatest IMHO

Ridiculous technique.

To be honest I love shred but that just sounds like noise to me. No disrespect intended but I just don't "get it".

Really, even if it is not your thing how can you not appreciate the technique and soul that went into his playing. I mean it's so obvious and UNREAL. The guy just oozes with soul and I'm not even a big fan or anything.

Wow great always knew the name but never heard him till now. You will get it when your more seasoned hes doing some deep stuff there.

Guess I don't get this guy either. Rhythm section is great and obviously the guy has crazy technique, but he never really says anything. Sounds like wanking to me.

cool , sick to see him on a les paul as well, shawn was scary good, one of my favourite players ever, i'll admit a lot of his playing isn't the easiest to get into

if you're looking for his more melodic based stuff i'd suggest checking out 'get you back' or 'gray pianos flying' or his rendition of 'once upon a time in the west'

here's a live version, he goes completely nuts at the end (from 4 minutes or so on )

I have to say I prefer his non-SLO tone. But man...what a player. RIP.

so glad i saw him live
his tone live was beautiful
so amazing how he made complex melodies and rhythmic combinations flow at such intense tempos

To dismiss Shawn's playing as wanking tells more about you as a player/ listener then it does about the genius that was Shawn Lane.

Statements like this tell that you are a musical elitist, and that you believe you are superior than most because your tastes are more technical, difficult, advante-guard, etc.

BTW, there's a difference between using then and than in English grammar. Not knowing which is appropriate to use could also tell something about one, wouldn't you agree?

It's fucking music ie. art. There are no rules as to what turns you on whether it's Miles Davis or Motorhead. I have never liked Shawn Lane's playing but would never say that people who do aren't "deep enough" to understand it's just wanking ;) (which of course it isn't, but I still don't like it)  Elitist is right. Shit, I went to Berklee (many years ago) and learned an understanding of a lot that he is doing but would rather hear the power chord and scream combo in Won't Get Fooled Again ten times a week and all day Sunday over that kind of approach to guitar. I love how people just can't state why they like or dislike something without assuming shit about others who hold a different view.

Everyone has their own tastes and opionions, I don't believe these comments are so much elitist as they are fueled by disbelief that someone could say it just sounds like "noise" as one poster stated, I mean yeah the guy could play a hundred miles a second as alot of his videos showcase, but unlike some who play that superspeed shred the guy could slow it down and have some incredible soul as showcased in the second video that rezamatix posted. I'ts all personal taste in the end.

so much everyone can learn from this guy, even if you don't like his body of work. Take a look a a few of his instructional DVDs and some of the picking techniques he uses for pentatonics. Then you will realize why he has that extra gear.

I agree with this. I think a separation can be made between technique and how it's applied. I've always envied folks like Lane and Yngwie who have that effortless looking right hand. Makes me feel like I'm trying to use a hammer to pull out a splinter

This guy kicks ass! Very fluid on that neck like he was born with a guitar in his hands.

Not a fan. Wanking over dissonant chords with no real root key is what i hear. But years ago i did admire the playing as well as the music.

The only one thing i can point out today that still holds true is Shawn Lane's always stellar execution and technique.

Judge me of you would like, but i would rather listen to Loomis, or this:
